Protesters yelling “Yankee go home!” attacked three U.S. sailors in Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday, while the warship USS Ross was in port.

The sailors were not injured and all returned to the ship, said Capt. Greg Hicks, a spokesman for U.S. European Command.

30 years ago, it was the same in Ankara.....you weren’t safe, even in civies. Mostly university students, who have good educations....and are frustrated that they have no prospect for a job....hence they go to German, England the EU. Not much has changed.

The ONLY reason Turkey is still in NATO is because Obama is still in the White House.

I was on the USS Intrepid visiting Instanbul in the middle fifties. Islam rules there so there wasn't much to do but look around. I spent most of my liberty at the brand-new hotel atop the town ... a hotel made famous earlier by an actress Terry Moore photo.

Meanwhile, our Intrepid was anchored in the Bosphorus (a sea to sea stream) and we made a spectacular maneuver in turning the carrier around.

Several ADs (propeller driven) were lashed down pointing to port and starboard ... they revved their propeller engines up upon lifting anchor. The Intrepid then turned around in mid-stream, and away we went.

Turkey is probably the least Islamic country of all of them,

Not under Erdogan.

That’s I know, but it is strange to see the entire society changing so fast.
And my observations about flag are pretty much dated to blame Doggy.

I believe even before it was simmering just below the surface. Ataturk tried and it worked for awhile, but inevitably, Turkey’s Islamic heritage would rear its’ ugly head again.

Last I heard there are six B-61 nukes stored there. We should fetch them home.

Good ol’ fashioned white western Christian guilt and a constant need for liberals to show Islam we bow down to them. It is the prime directive of all federal agencies. After all, NASA’s most important mission is to make muslims feel good about themselves.

You’re correct. Turks are actually & still Very hardcore muslim in mentality. Ataturk had alot of difficulty trying to secularize. He arrested, subdued & even executed many clerics. Remember Mecca for a long time was controlled by the Ottoman Empire, before the Brits installed the House of Saud just after WW1. Although there are secularists still in Turkey, the mentality of the Turks is still quite Islamic. And, they can be totally brutal. Erdogan is an Islamist too but tries superficially to appear not to be. Mostly because of wanting Turkey to be accepted as part of Europe & Turkey also being in NATO.

Yes. That’s pure politics. I often think NATO needs to be revisited. I’d say Turkey has a combination of strong nationalism & muslim mentality. That’s a dangerous mix, imo.

I’m glad there was a video so Americans know it happened, but I am mad there is a video because muslims will see it and feel empowered.

~Ataturk had alot of difficulty trying to secularize. He arrested, subdued & even executed many clerics.~

Who he thought he was? Assad, Gaddafy or maybe even Saddam?
Too bad Obama, Hillary and McCain weren’t around to save peace preaching mullahs the trouble like they restlessly do in Libya, Syria and so on.
Turkey might have been dar-es-salam many years ago in this case.

Who he thought he was? Assad, Gaddafy or maybe even Saddam?

None of the above. Horses for courses (different strokes for different folks) as they say.

Must add, since Ataturk everything & most things positive Turks have to date, domestically & internationally, are because of processes, economically, socially & politically, Ataturk put in place, during his time, despite the Islamics; that includes multi-faceted modernity post Ottoman Empire.

However, two things Ataturk couldn't entirely change, that his short life, and will be subject to the will of the Islamists are culture and mentality of the majority of Turks. You see, unlike Iran, for example, the Turks do not have a strong alternative (non-Islamic) religion, and have not carried over their pre-Islamic culture with them since the Islamic conquest.

So, dar-e-eslam was many yrs ago, but still is very much alive and kicking; no matter how dormant. More so because by majority the Turks are very much Sunni (85% of muslim world & worldwide are Sunni), and they have a track-record of controlling Mecca for some centuries. That much is very understood by the Most muslims. All the Turks or the influential Islamic portion of them have to do, even gradually, is to awaken that 'Islamic greatness & prestige'.

I actually realize all of the above, only tried to be ironic. You know, Mustafa killed some clerics after all.
