He received no national-party funding, ran what he calls an old-school campaign without data-driven analytics, and had only one paid staffer, at $500 per month, but this third-generation dairy farmer from California may just pull out the biggest upset of the 2014 cycle.
As of publication time, Republican Johnny Tacherra is leading longtime Democratic lawmaker Jim Costa in the yet-to-be-decided race for the Golden States 16th congressional district. With provisional ballots still to be counted, and with a 700-plus-vote cushion, Tacherra is confident that he will survive. He and his wife are heading to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday to take part in freshmen-member orientation on Capitol Hill.
Thanks to his vigorous grass-roots campaign and the perception that Costa is increasingly disconnected from the drought-stricken district, Tacherra has surprised political observers from both parties, offering another sign of hope for Republicans in an already strong election cycle. He credits his tight focus on local issues, persistent outreach to traditionally Democratic constituencies, and tireless campaigning for his victory.
Tacherras decision to jump into the race came after a discouraging meeting with Congressman Costa in his D.C. office. When Costa rebuffed his and other farmers concerns about water shortages in the rural agricultural district, Tacherra says he knew that Costa had lost touch back home.

No clue who your talking about. Care to provide more?
Is he a true conservative or a RINO?
Yeah and he ran on strong border security and conservative values but you know the National GOP they spent their money on glitter boy candidate.
He’s strong on border security and its a majority hispanic district. That says enough for me.
“No clue who your talking about. Care to provide more? “
Ever watch Johnny Football a couple of years ago?

I sure hope he survives the provisionals....Cali dim party as bad as Chicago. It would be stunning if Costa lost
Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel from Texas A&M, now with the Cleveland Browns.
from California you can never be sure....I note that he is central valley and that tends to be more conservative (think Tom McClintock)
Oops, I got the dreaded red X. I’ll have to write back later. Duty calls.
What happened in the close Virginia race Gillespie? I think?
That would be Johnny “U” (aka Johnny Unitas) the man with the golden arm.
He’s a Tea Party favorite.
The Republican tsunami!
“In a Hispanic-majority district, where immigration could be a snag for a Republican, he was able to communicate why border security is key to solving the issue of immigrants in the country illegally, and that amnesty would cause more problems than it would fix.”
GOP-E take note, he ran in a safe democrat, majority hispanic district on Conservative and common sense principals and apparently has won without your help.
Conservatism and common sense wins, pandering loses.
Wow great article, glad I read it.
This guy is my hero
Can the Republicans just seat him and refuse to seat Costa?
Seems I remember the dimoKKKRATS doing something like that.
