HASKELL, Okla. – A chicken patty, small scoop of mashed potatoes and carton of milk aren’t enough to sustain a high school boy.
But under the school lunch regulations championed by First Lady Michelle Obama, that’s what Haskell High School served recently.
Haskell High School senior Darrel Bunch took a photo of one of his recent skimpy school lunches and sent it to Fox 23.
“It’s mostly the portions,” Bunch says. “Last year we started getting less food.”
“Last year, my boys started calling me, ‘Can you please bring me something to eat?’ ‘We’re still hungry,’ or, ‘This is gross,” the student’s mother, Cheryl Bunch tells the news station.
Another photo taken by a different student showed a single cheese-filled bread stick with marinara sauce.
"When they serve a bread stick and marinara, it’s like, ‘Here, I’ve given up on trying to find you something nutritious and healthy,'” Cheryl Bunch says.
The school refused to allow the news station to show that day’s lunch servings. They wouldn’t even speak on camera.
Haskell superintendent Sharon Herrington defended the lunches off-camera, saying students are offered five items and they are required to take three. That means the chicken patty, glob of potatoes and milk would qualify as a complete lunch under the federal rules.

Funny part is, when I cruise by schools in the hood (where the kids are eating both breakfast and lunch year round now) the kids appear to be chunky on average.

I read that in the title and in my mind almost hurled.
The I looked at the pics of those lunches and thought if my plate looked like that in high school or grammar school, I simply would have left school and not come back.
I would say my ‘heart skipped a beat’ when I saw the words “Skimpy” and “Michelle” next door to each other, but I;d be lying. What really happened is that my stomach dropped until I could ‘get my mind right’ and stay on topic.

What can I say? If you want more food, don’t expect the government to give it to you for free.

I keep reading the headline as skimpy Michelle and wonder what kind of measurement system they use. A buddy of mine uses the county courthouse as a size reference. As in Michelle’s butt is the size of the courthouse.
I have seen some threads that indicate that students are being charged around $3.00 for lunches.
$3.00 for those pictured????? Who is pocketing the rest of the money??? Those pictured probably cost less than 70¢ and they have less food content than some from previous posts — and those from the previous posts were overcharging for content, too.

One recent thread said that some schools are losing thousands-of-dollars because student won’t eat the crap they serve. It ends up in the garbage.
Looks like a man and I don’t mean the one next to it.
