Here’s what I don’t get: there was a 22 in the back seat and it worried the cop. He gets paid to worry. I realize there are a number of entirely innocent explanations for that and it’s not a crime to possess a rifle. If the cop thought these guys were up to no good, and thought he had good reason to be worried, why didn’t he just get a damn warrant??? It takes a while, I know, but he’s working his shift no matter what; the people who are going to be “inconvenienced” are the guys with the car and the rifle.

NEW DEVELOPMENT:

Cop just announced his resgnation.

But that is not good enough. He needs to be found guilty of a felony and never carry a badge ever again.

I agree...and it is irritating because most cops are decent guys.

There are two deputies in Broward county Florida who didn’t know they were on camera either—they slammed a guy’s face into the ground who was drunk but harmless. Their official report, issued before the video was discovered, said they “escorted the subject to the ground”....something like that.

Two strong young men, face-slammed an older fifty-something guy into the pavement.

Then, when something like Ferguson happens, when a cop is TRULY defending himself, all the media does is bring up this stuff.

(note: the Broward cops appear to have gotten away with the act—the media has gone dark over the story...one report in late April, nothing since.)

They were sassy, get over it. The cop was arrested as he should have been. Just because you are standing up for your constitutional rights doesn’t grant you the priviledge of being a jerk, or worse.

Standing for our hard won RIGHTS under our Constitution isn’t “sassy,” it’s a citizen’s duty ...

I'm not sure why you posted that to me since I said exactly the same thing before you.

Just the presence of a .22-caliber rifle, in plain sight, on the back seat, does NOT elevate this to a “public safety” issue!

If he had asked me if I wanted him to get a search warrant, the answer is am emphatic YES.

Sure. They'll just impound your car and let you wait at the police station until they get the search warrant.

Exactly. The cop asks for permission to search the car, then threatens with a search warrant. At that point the owner should have said, “Bring it on because that is the only way you are going to legally search my car.”

He’ll just move to another town and continue his gestapo tactics there.

“I know former police officers who tell me part of the problem is young officers coming up are taught very little about the fundamentals of the constitution.”

There’s your problem right there. Young officers should know the fundamentals of the constitution long before they get to Police Academy.

I agree 100%.

This ex-cop doesn’t look like a youngster, though.

Another problem for the force is that NOW every arrest he ever made is going to come under suspicion—even if they were all clean.

I know former police officers who tell me part of the problem is young officers coming up are taught very little about the fundamentals of the constitution.

Obviously, that should be a top priority, but instead, they act as if it's not even important.

Does anyone recall a certain story regarding the Apostle Paul?

Subsequent to one of Paul's many arrests, he was casually beaten by a Roman guard.

Paul then informed the guard that he was a Roman citizen, at which point the guard's life was potentially forfeit, due to the fact that he had beaten a Roman citizen without the proper due process.

The same principle should apply nowadays.

Regard for the Constitutional rights of Americans should always be of paramount importance to law enforcement officers, and violation of those rights should bring severe penalties, as opposed to simply a slap on the wrist or nothing at all.

And anybody who's uncomfortable with that, or thinks that routine rudeness and physical or verbal abuse are acceptable, should stay the Hell away from a law enforcement career.

Enough is enough. Cops literally get away with assault and murder on a daily basis.

“Regard for the Constitutional rights of Americans should always be of paramount importance to law enforcement officers, and violation of those rights should bring severe penalties, as opposed to simply a slap on the wrist or nothing at all.”

Make no mistake, if LE examines the Constitution, it is for the purposes of finding a way AROUND it, not for honoring it. Our rights are nothing but in the way to cops. Here we had two cops, not just one, #$@ all over the Constitution.

Take drug dogs. Anyone paying attention knows they are worthless for accuracy. Cops don’t care, so long as it gives them probable cause for a search. They’ll even train the dog to park on a secret command. It is call Trick Pony.

Then there is the recent court case over examining cell phone data without a warrant. Any person seeking to honor the Constitution would understand the privacy issues that raises. Not cops. They fought as hard as they could.

Recently, some cops got caught making illegal searches of homes by pretending they got a 911 call from the address, then needed to do a Safety Check. All BS.

And my favorite. Maybe someone knows the whole story. But I remember there was an East Coast state that somehow came up with the interpretation that Fish and Game officers didn’t need warrants. Yehaww!!! We’ll make all our officers Fish and Game officers. It failed in court of course.

Remember always we are talking about a profession that long ago abandoned any concept of personal honor and integrity, or personal responsibility. Deal with cops from that perspective.

One Christmas Eve a couple of years ago I got stopped for speeding while coming home from a party. I had known I had a long drive so was very careful about my drinking. The cop tells me he smells alcohol (my wife was in the car also and it easily could have been hers)and orders me out so I could take the field sobriety test. I would have been within my rights to politely refuse the field tests, but I knew I wasn’t drunk so I complied. He administered the field breath test, looked at the result and started yelling at me that I didn’t breathe hard enough. He then called his partner over and administered the test again. More yelling and smacking the test unit against his leg because according to him it must have been malfunctioning. After ten more minutes of yelling by him and his partner and two more tests he finally let me go on my way. At least he had the decency not to give me the speeding ticket. I know there are a lot of good cops, but there are quite a few as*holes as well.

There was a second cop at the scene for all of this.

Three deputies, a local TV station reported earlier today.

“The investigation into the situation is still ongoing. Although Sgt. Glans resigned, there were two other deputies on the scene during this incident, neither of which came forward until after the video surfaced. Zurlo says they are still being questioned and the matter is still under investigation.”

Hopefully not, but many go to universities and hospitals as security officers/consultants and provide little if any real value.
