The red tide that swept across the entire country Tuesday broke at the borders of Oregon. On the island, no Democratic incumbents were defeated, Sen. Jeff Merkley and Gov. John Kitzhaber and four Democratic congressmen were handily re-elected, and the party picked up one seat in the state House and at least one in the state Senate. It wasn't a huge legislative increase except that virtually everyplace else, Democratic legislators (and majorities) were being hauled out to the recycling bin.
More important, Oregon's Democratic electorate is not the same as in many states; it's one of the few places where Obama has twice won among white voters. What's changed Oregon from the Republican dominance of two and three decades ago to its current oceanic blueness is different from the coalition the Democrats are trying to put together in North Carolina.

Good, let them enjoy their isolation in a liberal utopia.
Massachusetts, and presumably Oregon... are doing something funky behind the scenes to choreograph this one-party putsch.
Has something to do with some or all (and more) of: Agenda-21, building codes, encouraging the “Big Sort”, state campaign finance laws, “affordable” housing, sanctuary cities/states, ...

So every idiot in the country moved to Portland?
Why am I not surprised?
Oregon has been in the economic dumps since the late 70’s. That makes it look like one of the rust belt states that have democratic trends as lots of motivated people leave for greener pastures.
Because Engineers are not conservative and can't do math...?
That's easy: proximity to California.
I’ve been to Oregon and found it to be far less than Texas. In fact, in the leftist cesspool of Portland, holder’s people ganged up on me and attempted an assault. I was a-carryin’ and that sent the thugs a-scurryin’. My impression is that the largely white populace of the state carries a burden of White Guilt and that’s one factor that contributes to its embrace of marxism.
Oooga booooga Sociology. Not engineering
Get the self pride out of your yeehaw or you will find God takes your yeehaw away too.
You can never expect to root out all the parasites in one pass.
Rhode Island is also a “blue island”.
And then there’s Connecticut and Vermont.
All states that are predominately made up of white people, who believe the network news and who have not yet been exposed to the hordes at the gate.
Many stupid people are nonetheless sufficiently functional not to advertise their stupidity. Apparently not this Oregonian.
When that post-industrial wealth disappears, there will be hard choices to be made.

No, I'm pretty sure that's not it. I'm gobsmacked and completely amazed when I find even ONE engineer (typically software engineers for some reason) who pledges to the dark side. Never really have figured out those exceptions. You'd think employment in a business where the results can be judged objectively, based on reality, would preclude liberal participation, but for some reason some do get in.
Did 0regonlive.com forget (cough, cough) to mention that voters in Oregon overwhelmingly rejected a law passed in 2013 that would grant drivers license cards to illegal aliens, defeating it by a landslide of 68% of voters in favor of vetoing S.B 833, with only 32% in support of the law, despite the pro-illegal side outspending the anti-illegal side about 10-1?
Not every idiot. There are plenty of idiots to go around, enough for Seattle, San Francisco, Boston...
Between environmental regulations and land use/zoning restrictions, Oregon is perfecting a form of utopia called the "no-growth economy".
In time, it will become a Luddite colony trapped in amber.
