You ARE correct that the media here uses Asian when referring to criminal cases, as a sop to PCism.
BUT as far as referring to communities, Asian in the UK still refers to Sikh and Hindu as well as Muslim. And is also still used in a broader sense by some people to refer to anyone from Asia, which will include people from what we term the Far East/Oriental.
You are right on one point, but wrong on another.

I have friends from India that are not Muslim and I know it is not largely Muslim. I was just pointing out the geographical difference in what we call “Asians”.

Also this is what friends of mine from UK have told me. There’s no question Muslim Asians cause the great majority of problems, so get the most attention, but the term is indeed inclusive.
There’s a derogatory term, Paki, which means Muslim only.
Not offended, just tired of having to correct this, as this issue re Asians in the UK has popped up many times. Nothing personal. I am a bit fed up being told by Americans (most of whom know little about the UK and don’t live here or even travel here) what things mean in my own country.

Stupid me, for trying to correct errors about my own actual country, the one I actually live in, unlike you and almost everyone here. Stupid me, for actually being British and living in Britain.
Neither Brits nor Americans uses the term “Asian” logically as an ethnic group or race.
In US it means East Asia: China, Japan, Vietnam, etc.
In UK it means South Asian: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh. Don’t know if Sri Lanka, Burma, Malaysia, etc. are included.
Both definition exclude the other and leave out Iranians, Israelis, Saudis, a whole bunch of Russians, Uzbeks, Turks, etc., etc.
