Des Moines A day after winning one of the most contested Senate seats in the country, Joni Ernst reported for duty at her National Guard base. Ernst, a lieutenant colonel, started two days of training with the 185th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion on Thursday.
Not many folks know she is in uniform on Thursday and Friday, Ernsts husband Gail tells National Review Online, She does it without fanfare.
A spokesman for the Iowa National Guard, Greg Hapgood, says soldiers dont punch the clock. We serve regardless of our situations and Colonel Ernst doesnt want to be treated any differently.
Ernst, a ferocious campaigner, had just finished a 24-hour straight campaign sweep of Iowa two days before reporting for duty. Her victory in the race also sealed the Senate for the GOP majority.
Hapgood admits that Ernsts is a unique situation and the Guard will have to work with the senator-elect to find a balance. She is going to be a soldier when on duty and a senator when off duty, Hapgood predicts.
An Ernst campaign source says the National Guard has already been accommodating Ernsts unique circumstances. She was supposed to drill last weekend but was able to reschedule until after the election, according to the source.
The senator-elect cannot do interviews while on duty, but those in close contact with Ernst say she is doing great and is happy to be back with her unit. According to Hapgood, Ernsts duties this weekend as a senior officer will include working with her team on how to best serve the logistical needs of Iowas National Guard. Shes working to make sure our units are totally combat ready, he says.
Taking time off for National Guard duty is nothing new for Ernst. The then-candidate took time off the trail this summer to serve a week. While she was serving, a number of high-level GOP names visited the state to fill in at campaign events and the Twitter hashtag #ondutyforJoni was started.
Iowa senator Chuck Grassley tells NRO that Ernsts military service is one of the prime reasons hes excited to have her in the Senate. Its really good for our National Defense, Grassley says, having the first female combat veteran [to serve] in the Senate will be good for all debate on national security.
Ernst served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and has been in the National Guard since 1993.
American Legion lobbyist Shaun Rieley is also an active member of the National Guard. He regularly shuttles between the halls of Congress and an Army training field and says its a culture shock. Its hard to go from Congress to a cold artillery field in the middle of nowhere, Rieley says, but its great knowing that youre working in D.C. for the guys that you serve with.
Will Ernst continue her training with the National Guard when fully instated as the junior senator from Iowa? That is still to be determined, one campaign aide admits. Interestingly, Ernsts new Senate colleagues have been encouraging her, behind closed doors, to stay in the National Guard. Senator Graham has encouraged her to continue her service, if possible, the aide tells NRO.
It takes a lot of work to do it correctly, but we can do it, Hapgood says of Ernst remaining in the National Guard. Ultimately this is a personal decision.
Hapgood says that regardless of what decision Ernst makes, the National Guard could not be more proud of her. She is the model of a citizen-soldier, he says. Her victory is indicative of our work ethic and commitment.
Perhaps no one is more proud than Ernsts husband, who is himself a retired Army Ranger. Truly, she is my hero, wife, and best friend! Gail says.

Thank you for your service, Joni. Please, don’t let the RINOS pimp you.
Many folks on this forum said all the Republicans cept Cruz and Palin were worthless. All the rest were rinos so stay home. I’m so glad we ignored them and patriots like Ernst are in office.
Ernst is a lieutenant colonel in the logistics branch and currently commands the 185th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion at Camp Dodge, the largest battalion in the Iowa Army National Guard.[10][11] As of 2014, Ernst had served 21 years between the Army Reserve and the National Guard. She spent 14 months in Kuwait in 2003-2004 as a company commander during Operation Iraqi Freedom.[8][12][13]

And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, has put the Lt Col into the good graces - and that is understatement - of this family.
Mr. niteowl77
Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!
Take a bow! ;-)
Thanks! Iowa has a very impressive new Senator!
The first sentence says she’s a Lt. Col.
LOL!
Four years in the Army and I never could
remember which color meant what.I just saluted
and said Sir...or every so often Mam.
Great story about Joni Ernst.
Her combat patch is 41st Brigade which is an Oregon National Guard Brigade. I should know, I was in 41st Brigade from 1992-2002 when I switched to Oregon Air Guard.
Interested to hear the story behind that.
She’s a Lieutenant Colonel (O-5). She is replacing retiring Democrat Tom Harkin, who saw fit to lie about his record as a Naval aviator. You may recall that Harkin claimed to have flown attack and recce missions over South Vietnam, but it turns out he was only a ferry pilot, flying aircraft to and from maintenance depots. He never saw combat, but persisted in lying about service until Barry Goldwater confronted him publicly.
Iowans can be proud for electing a woman of character and integrity to the Senate.
Beautiful!
Very cool to wakeup and realize Tom “Karl Marx” Harkin no longer will be our Senator after January.
And then to realize Joni will.
I think Joni will make a great Senator.
I must say I didn’t really see any of her until her acceptance speech, but I really like her!
Let me guess...
Obama is sending her to Iraq?
Great replacement for Tom Harkin.
Telephone Colonel is Silver Oak Leaf.
I can see why the pinkos wanted to derail her campaign.
