Ruble Rout Accelerates as Russia's Central Bank Stands Aside

The Russian currency plunged almost 4 percent against the U.S. dollar Thursday amid relentless selling pressure after the Central Bank announced it was limiting market interventions to defend the ruble.
The ruble dropped to 46.7 versus the dollar early evening in Moscow, a historical low, while also falling below the mark of 58 to the euro for the first time ever.
The declines mean the ruble has fallen over 40 percent against the greenback since the start of the year.

Wasn't the ruble recently touted as a 'settlement currency' for some international trades, to get rid of the dollar?

Your comment in post #4 would make an appropriate caption.
LOL.

It was funny wasn’t it. It needed no caption, and that’s the funny part.
I guess anyone not used to a hockey helmet could make that mistake, but it was funny to see him do that when the only reason for him to be out there would be public consumption that he was really a jock.
It kindof backfired if that footage was used.

Apparently in Russia they see things differently.
That said, given that the Ruble has lost 20% of its value in the last year and Brent crude oil is trading below $83 a barrel, it's Putin and his oligarch buddies who are getting spanked.

Wonder what happens when the central bank or whoever, gets tired of propping up the dollar.

Not long ago, Russia needed an oil price of about $101 per barrel to break even.

First Shale oil drove oil price down, followed by Saudi’s lowering the oil price. Now oil price is in 70’s (in dollars.) Russia is in deep financial trouble.
