Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is planning to make ObamaCare a priority in his first weeks as leader of the Senate, vowing a sustained effort to dismantle the law piece-by-piece.
Instead of a full repeal, McConnell said the GOP will tackle unpopular aspects of the law such as the individual mandate, the medical device tax and the 30-hour workweek requiring employers to provide insurance.
These are the kinds of things that I believe there is a bipartisan majority in the Senate to approve, he said in the interview with Time magazine published Wednesday. The only other priority he listed was the Keystone XL pipeline. The newly reelected senator isn't giving up on full repeal, however.
"He does support full repeal and will continue to push for it," McConnell spokesman Brian McGuire told The Hill.
I wouldn’t be so sure that Obama would have a choice.
With the majority Republicans have it doesn’t take all that many Democrats to make it veto proof.
There are definitely Democrats who would not vote for it again, especially now.
Most Democrats want to get re-elected next time. If the topic is chosen wisely, a veto could very well be overridden. It would only take 13 in the Senate, and about 60 in the house. That's not impossible, especially if Obama starts to demonstrate unstable behavior.
“If Obama vetoes it, then he owns it. Any Democrat who doesnt vote to overturn the veto would own it.”
But he already owns it. He is happy to own it. If he wasn’t, then these guys would have been furiously trying to dump it before the elections.
“You try to fix it and Obama signs off on the fix, then YOU own it.”
If he allows the I-M to die, then the whole thing dies with it.
This isnt to fix it. It is to kill it.
“The law in its entirety is unconstitutional”
Yeah...we tried that route. Didn’t turn out so well.
“Do you favor McConnell violating his oath to try to legitimize a wholly unconstitutional robbery of your liberty? Is that the path you really want your representatives to take?”
These people aren’t God. Continuously sending blanket repeals for show votes will be met with an equal number of vetoes and then you will get a public that will grow tired of the GOP majority just spending their time fruitlessly doing the same thing over and over again.
Then what do we do? Start screaming at them for not magically getting past his veto pen? with maybe 53 Senate seats?
It isnt about getting it fully repealed because we CANT. No matter how much we jump up and down and shake our fists, we dont have the seats.
You think there are Democrats who would vote to repeal Obamacare?
I tend to doubt it. Maybe Joe Manchin would vote to do it. But not many others.
BHO will veto it. It would require a 2/3 vote to override the veto.
BTW-—I have no problem with voting to repeal Obamacare and getting everyone’s vote on record.
I just don’t think Obamacare will be repealed until we have a Congress AND a POTUS dedicated to repealing it.
It will be perceived as a tax cut for the rich, they should be smart enough to know that. It should never be mentioned, just included in some other bill.
” The bottom line is that the Chamber of Commerce *supports* the equivalent of Obamacare, or even single payer socialized medicine. This is because the taxpayers will be paying for the healthcare of their employees, so they dont have to.”
NAILED it!
The medical device tax is probably the only part of the law that could be considered Constitutional, but for the fact that the Bill did not originate in the House.
.
By then it will be too late.
” the very turtle you guys were shaming Conservatives into voting for - insisting we overlook what he did for Cochran in MS and his vow to ‘crush’ the Tea Party - SURRENDERS the weapon to stop Obama’s agenda, so they can have a seat at the government trough. “
See post # 106.
My main concern is McConnell's stand on amnesty. His in-laws are from China and his wife was born in Taiwan. I presume they are legal immigrants considering they high position she held under Bush. Don't know if it is true, but there are rumors (spread by Dems?) that he dumped his first wife for her.
Those rate increases, he blackmailed the insurance companies from announcing until after the election, just might though.
Then...we’re stuck with it permanently if that’s the case.
I cannot see any scenario where BHO would not veto a repeal of his signature legislation which he views as a great accomplishment.
It would be like FDR signing a repeal of Social Security.
I do not oppose the new Congress voting to repeal Obamacare. But it does not currently have the the votes to override BHO’s veto. That’s all I’m saying.
I’d really like it repealed. The med device tax is probably one of the easiest parts to explain away. “Ma’am this tax is causing the cost of your life-saving Intestinal Exploroctomy Machine to skyrocket and it’s costing you lots of money.”
REPEAL!
Clinton vetoed welfare reform twice and only signed the third one because he was worried another veto would sink him on a very popular bill in 1996.
After he signed it he spent the entire 1996 convention telling the far left “don’t worry, I’ll fix it” but it was too late. GOP governors ran with it.
Now, of course, Obama has done everything he can (under a ‘crises’ of course) to reverse those reforms.
I disagree. Repeal it in full and let him veto it. Over and over and over. The people hate it in droves - upwards of 75-80%. Let Obama piss them off.
Everytime he vetoes the repeal Hillary loses 5 points in 2016!
I thought up what I think could be a good compromise today.
Trade no Obamacare repeal for no EO on amnesty. Then poison pill Obamacare to death over a series of small “fixes” bills, while running up an immigration bill centered on border protection and no path to citizenship.
But I think that Obama NEEDS that amnesty EO. So when he refuses the deal it’s all on him for being obstructionist and refusing to compromise.
0bama doesn’t negotiate.
If Dems don’t (fine, I don’t care) then those Senators up in 2016 along with the 174 left in the House will be on record for 2016.
Let them kill their party on this issue.
Repeal, Veto, Repeal, Veto, Repeal, Veto...until there are no more libtard Dems!!
