While many religious leaders might condemn 29-year-old Brittany Maynard's decision to end her own life under Oregon's Death With Dignity Act, the bishop of the Evangelical Catholic Diocese of the Northwest is "spiritually and personally sure" she was "received into God's loving hands." . . . .
The bishop wasn't making a "blanket endorsement" of physician-assisted suicide, said William Morton, a spokesperson for the Evangelical Catholic Church's Northwest region.
It doesn't matter if Maynard was a Christian or not, Morton said, because the bishop doesn't think belief in God is a requirement for entry into heaven.
"God is not worried about what church a person belongs to," Morton said. "God's love is unconditional."

What pray tell is the Evangelical Catholic Diocese of Portland. Is that the host diocese for the 24 Hour Drive-up Church of Elvis?
Not really the Catholic Church — just some group trying to hijack the name.
This is not the Roman Catholic Church.
This is NOT a Roman Catholic bishop.
“It seems they chose the name of their church deliberately - probably in an attempt to confuse people and make them think they are Roman Catholic. Who knows??”
I know. It was a sinister attempt to tarnish the RCC and lead the weak down the wrong path.
This is good for business. His rate for indulgences will skyrocket!
Well, I think that Evangelicals and Catholics can agree that this guy is NEITHER Evangelical NOR Catholic!
"If he won't listen to the church, treat him as a pagan or tax collector." --Jesus

I think this "bishop" threw in the word "Catholic," like Benny Hinn wears his faux priest collar.
No. Just another Sola Scriptura church.
Try John 14:6 “No one comes to the father except through me.”
Sorry, I guess my super-scientific Wiki search led me astray. So what you are telling me is they are offshoots of fake Lutherans who are now claiming to be Catholics? My head is starting to spin.
Who am I to say whom God lets into Heaven? That being said it could be paving the way for a one-world religion which doesn't matter what you believe as long as you are basically a "good person".
What she did was her choice, but I think it's not a good thing to crusade for that cause. In fact here is what the Catholic catechism has to say about it:
2282 If suicide is committed with the intention of setting an example, especially to the young, it also takes on the gravity of scandal. Voluntary co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law.
There's more about suicide, also abortion, euthanasia, self-defense in that section with paragraph numbers.
“It doesn’t matter if Maynard was a Christian or not, Morton said, because the bishop doesn’t think belief in God is a requirement for entry into heaven.”
Wow. That whole thing about the narrow and wide road obviously was a fluke. I guess we can safely say that Hitler, Stalin, Chavez, and all the other lovely dictators are in Heaven. You know, since belief in God isn’t a requirement to spend eternity with him.
Been Catholic all my life
Got stuck on ‘Evangelical Catholic Bishop’
Please don’t buy this
“God’s love is unconditional.”
The Bible doesn’t say that. In fact, it the concept makes no sense at all.
God may unconditionally offer love, but there must be a human response.
For some reason it seems to be a popular idea that love should be unconditional, but it almost never is. We love certain individuals, and for reasons (good or bad), but we definitely do not love everyone equally, and there are always conditions. Not even a pet loves you unconditionally, though some dogs respond well to kindness (and regular feeding), but they do not keep loving if mistreated.
So lets forget this unconditional nonsense. I don’t even want unconditional love from my own wife: I would like to think that there is a reason for her affection. If it were truly unconditional, it could apply to just anyone. And I would not have to behave in the least properly. I know that the arrangement then would not last very long!
This does not mean that people in love are not called upon to practice forgiveness, tolerance, and loyalty.
If God really loved unconditionally, then He would not matter in our ethical lives. There would be no such thing as a sin which counted, and Jesus would not have had to die on the cross.
Now, as for this assisted suicide, it frightens me a lot less than an abortion. For one thing, the woman involved was not killing another person. She was ending her own life to avoid pain. She concluded that he life was essentially over.
Now we can argue that her act was impious, as life is a gift. We can say that she was perhaps improperly willful about it. But it was her own life, and she is called upon to make judgements. It does not seem that she did this thing in a fit of depression, so she was in sound mind consenting to her own act.
This sort of assisted euthanasia will probably never be common, but I think that we should at least acknowledge that it is distinct from the killing involved in abortion, or the murder of another person.
I’m so perplexed by this statement. The Catholic religion is becoming so contradictory. I will not judge this woman, as she seemed determined to end her life before Her disease took its toll. However, as an ex-Catholic and now a Pentecostal Christian, let’s call it what it is. Assisted Suicide. PERIOD.
I most be missing something.
OTOH, Lauren Hill is trying to live every day to it’s absolute fullest before her brain tumor ends her life in a matter of weeks or days. Lauren is an inspiration. Brittany, not so much.
