HALLOWEEN: SPOOKY CLASSICAL MUSIC
SCHUBERT: GRAVE AND MOONIf ghosts can sing, can a grave talk? You might not like what it has to say.
Johann Gabriel Seidl is a German poet of the third rank, but Frannie was fond of his poetry, and much of it survives because of what Schubert did with it. This song is a male quartet, and it asks the question, Do moonbeams ever make it into the grave?
In the last line, the grave answers, Come and see! But its that tone of horror! He saves the A minor to A Major modulation for the very last note, which ends with a sense of resignation.
Silver-blue moonlight shines down,
Sinking many a beam into the grave.
Dear moon, sleeps friend, do not keep it secret
Whether darkness or light dwells in the grave.
Is all mute? Well, you speak then, silent grave!
You have drawn so many a beam to rest.
You hide so many a moons glance, silvery-blue,
Give back just one beam!
Come and see!
This is a vocal quartet that calls itself Schnittpunktvokal.

HALLOWEEN: SPOOKY CLASSICAL MUSIC
MUSSORGSKY: NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAINModest Mussorgskys original piece for orchestra is rarely heard today, and it cant be topped for sheer demonic power. This is Claudio Abbado conducting the Berlin Philharmonic,
Mussorgsky: Night on Bald Mountain
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov removed the dissonances of the original and shortened it. Today, this is the best known version. This is Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic.
Mussorgsky/Rimsky-Korsakov: Night on Bald Mountain
Walt Disney and Leopold Stokowski used the Rimsky-Korsakov arrangement, but shortened it. This is from Fantasia.
Mussorgsky/Rimsky-Korsakov/Stokowski: Night on Bald Mountain
See you tomorrow night at the Canteen Chapel for classical pieces involving death and religion.
