In 10 Years, Windowless Planes Will Give Passengers A Panoramic View Of The Sky
boredpanda ^ | 10/28/14 | Dovas

Posted on 10/29/2014 7:31:33 AM PDT by Malone LaVeigh

The Center for Process Innovation, a British technology research company, thinks they’ve got the next big step in aviation transportation figured out. They want to remove the windows from passenger planes and replace them with OLED touch-screens that extend along the plane’s entire length and display the view from outside through cameras mounted on the plane’s exterior.

Just start making planes out of transparent aluminum.

That is all about a stupid idea and making money. We want to see out of our windows you idiots. The next thing you know there will be World of Warcraft on the screen during the flights if the idea takes hold. Some silver spoon fed kid who was happy being given participation ribbons on field and track day thinks he can make a bazillion bucks and join the likes of Zuckerberg or the Twinker gang...

I doubt I will ever fly again anyway, but I don’t see the point of this.

I think a glass bottom plane would suffice.

Advertisements. It will be advertisements.

"This scenic view brought to you by Dewshay Airlines, and their advertising partners. Please enjoy the next 10 minutes of panoramic commericals for feminine products and erectile dysfunctional pills before we let you see another 2 minutes of the outside world."

I would never get on a windowless plane. Never. Never. Never.

It is a aircraft design idea certainly worth considering.
A windowless aircraft would boost the structural rigidity of the airplane.
It might simultaneously also make it lighter, faster, more fuel efficient, and stronger.
The kicker? High-resolution cameras might provide a better outward view than current window placement allows.

This will not be nearly as cool as it looks in the artist’s rendering.

Think about it for a second. If each point in the panel displays what is directly perpendicular to that point on the outside of the plane, it would not make spacial sense to an observer in the plane, who would see the normal view in the panel right next to him, but would see a forshortened view of the panels in front of and behind him. So it would not look like he was flying in a glass tube, as shown here.

The alternative is a panoramic view, taken from the center of the fuselage. This would look right when seen from the center of the aircraft, but would be distorted when viewed from any other point. To a person sitting in the tenth row, the view at the end of his row would be a compressed view out the front of the aircraft, which would have no relation to what is actually outside. Having the view not match up with the actual aircraft movements would almost certainly induce nausea.

I would love to have a camera mounted in the nose that displayed on the entertainment system mounted on the seat-back in front of me. That would be cool, and would make me much more comfortable on the flight.

If SST’s become viable again, then we will see a windowless plane, if only for weight-saving and better thermal stability of airplane structure reasons.

Well, as long as the pilots get to keep the cockpit windows.

Equipped with eyeball-tracking technology like the Amazon Fire Phone, so as you looked at the image from different directions, it could display the view from a different angle, as if you were actually looking through a window.

OK. I would pay extra for that.
