McConnell cuts himself a $1.8 Million check

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell plans to counter the influx of Democratic spending aimed at defeating him by writing a big personal check.

The Republican leader is loaning his campaign $1.8 million out of his own bank account, exceeding a $1.5 million investment by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Senate Majority PAC to bolster the prospects of Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes.

A McConnell campaign official told POLITICO Friday that his boss is making the donation because he has long said that the National Republican Senatorial Committee should spend money in other hotly contested races — not his own.

“Sen. McConnell has maintained a longstanding personal commitment to his members that he won’t draw any resources from the team,” said John Ashbrook, McConnell’s spokesman. “So he’s going to match Obama’s money men out of his own pocket.”

The move does not suggest that the McConnell campaign is short of money, officials said. In campaign finance reports filed last week, McConnell reported $5.2 million in cash in his account. But the move is also not out of character for the senator, whose minimum net worth was estimated by the Center for Responsive Politics to be $9.2 million in 2012.

In 2008, McConnell secured a $1.8 million loan in the final days of his campaign before his 6-point victory against businessman Bruce Lunsford.

Democrats are more upbeat about their prospects in Kentucky after a Survey USA poll earlier this week showed the GOP leader up just 1 point. As a result of favorable polling, DSCC officials said this week they would spent $650,000 on the air in the final stretch of the campaign, after signaling earlier they would not increase their spending across the airwaves. Similarly, the Senate Majority PAC, a big-spending Democratic super PAC run by top Harry Reid advisers, plans to up its attacks on McConnell on TV to the tune of $850,000, according to media trackers.

Not sure I believe that poll. The 'Rat strategy for vote fraud is to skew the polls and make the race competitive a week before the Election. I know that Mitch McConnell is one of the most hated men in America (count me in that number), but I cannot fathom the Senate Minority Leader with 30 years incumbency, losing in this Election Year Climate. So, I say again: The Dems are prepping for vote fraud.

1.8 million dollars for a 175,000 dollar job. Absurd. Seriously the spending is insane and in the long run a waste of money. I would imagine that if a person was really passionate about their beliefs, they wouldn’t need to spend a ton of money.

It's amazing how politicians go to Washington as Middle Class Citizens and leave multi-Millionaires.

What I want to know is how does McConnell have that kind of dough to spend! Did he have a fortune before he entered politics or is he a Harry Reid clone?

I wish McConnel were not the R candidate, but that hope died in the Primary. So now it’s just a giant sinkhole for Democrat money that would otherwise be spent elsewhere.

Grimes’ political strategy is to lie about her position on coal and then support Obama’s efforts to cripple the energy industry with carbon taxes.

McConnell never had a job outside of DC. He worked as a staffer and then ran for office.

Amazing is right! All that money on a salary with ZERO bonuses.

They are all crooked!

Politicians claim they want to be elected and go to Washington to do well.

And once there almost all of them do very well.

Incorrect on the part “outside of DC”. He was an assistant Attorney General in Kentucky and also was the County Judge Executive for Jefferson County Kentucky.

The Democrat Party needs to be demolished beyond recognition for nominating such a far Left Marxist who is bankrupting our country, weakening our national security, and turning U.S. into a socialistic monstrosity. Every Democrat on the ballot is a proxy for BHO. No exceptions. Every last one of the should be defeated, even if that means voting for some GOPes to make sure Harry Reid is no longer Majority Leader. There is nothing to think about. Nothing to debate. Nothing to consider, Nothing to ponder. Even if the GOP candidate isn’t perfect, vote for him anyway, hold your nose if necessary. The ONLY way to take back America is to thoroughly annihilate the Democrat Party next week. Did anyone catch what HRC said about business? They ALL think that way. Not every Republican is perfect, but all Dems are Marxists.

Wow, all of his jobs where in the government. Do tell.

I just looked on Wikipedia. I didn't notice that he did something before he started staffing with DC Senators.

Regardless, There is only two ways to get that wealthy while in congress: Graft or insider trading. Probably a little of both.

of course, the scammers will always throw comforting promises but they have a program and a mission they intend to finish, and it is called Progress.

Keep in mind that Grimes is raking in record-setting (according to her campaign, anyways) amounts of money. Her last filing showed a take above $5 million.

Thats money thats not going to other Dem candidates. McConnell doing this might even spur Dems to donate more to her campaign as a counter-measure.

I still think McConnell wins by about 5. But even if he loses enough Liberal $$$ has flowed into electing Grimes to swing two or three other races to the GOP side.

I don’t. Since he won the primary, he has to win the election. Senators are almost impossible to remove once they are in office. Grimes would be in the Senate for thirty years of stupidity and Leftism.

There’s a third way: marriage.

Does anyone really think John Kerry married the Widow Heinz for love?

Elaine Chou may have had humble beginnings, but as a former Labor Secretary she’s certainly well positioned enough to have legitimately (speaking fees, corporate board positions, etc) built that kind of a nest egg within a few years of leaving office.

The problem is that most of the Republican candidates running do not share your excellent post. They are merely running and promoting the same statist agenda only at a slower rate of speed.

It really doesn't matter if the GOP doesn't win the Senate. They have had the House for 4 years and did nothing to stop the Obama/leftist agenda.

Jack Brooks, long-time, Democratic Congressman from Southeast Texas was defeated in the GOP landslide in '94. When he first ran for office, the guys at Pipefitters Local 195 had to push his car to get it started after a campaign appearance. The seat of his suit pants was slick from wear. 40 years later, he left Washington a multi-Millionaire and on the Board of 10 Banks. THAT IS OBSCENE AND VULGAR!!!

The GOP is far from perfect, but it overwhelming opposed Obamacare, the Porkulus, Crap and Trade, and Dodd-Frankenstein, and most opposed BHO’s SCOTUS appointments.

We have to work with what we have.
