A former aide to President Ronald Reagan wants a handful of Southern states to secede from the union and form a new country named for the late GOP hero.

It may come to a shock to some Alabamians, however, that Douglas MacKinnon's vision of the country known as "Reagan" would initially only include South Carolina, Florida and Georgia. Those three states were chosen, MacKinnon told talk show host Janet Mefferd, due to their population size and natural resources, such as access to the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.

OK, what should the new "state" be called if not Reagan?...

Clinton, Nixon, Bush 41, Bush 42?.....JFK?

I beg to differ. Large land mass, lots of agriculture (kind of a mini California in that aspect), necessary to feed a burgeoning nation. Plenty of seafood and a great tourist industry to bring in revenue, with a higher than average employment rate. Built in Naval stations that are carrier capable. Let us worry about converting the northeasters; with better voter fraud legislation that will come with being in Reaganland, they will soon leave or die off.

Plus we already have plenty o' guns!

You old FReepers know that Reagan is revered here.

He wasn't perfect, just a hell of a lot better than his predecessor

That doesn’t mean we have to overlook his flaws.

“They wanted to achieve Jeffersonian ends by Hamiltonian means, utilizing that powerful federal government to fix the political and economic systems ...”

I don’t think that I’ve ever seen that formulation before. Now I’m going to have to think deeply on a Friday night. Damn! I blame you. But seriously, I’ve given it the once over, and bookmarked it for a more thorough reading later. Looks outstanding.

I love the Gipper.

It was he vs the State, and although he won a fair share of his battles against it the State is too big and powerful for any one man.

The Republic of Texas needs no pretenders.
It has a perfect name already.

All the Red States need to be included. Shortly after we leave we can demand the immediate and full surrender of Colorado and New Mexico and take them over. Next thing to do is finish the fence along our Southern border and build one between our Mr Lee country and the Blue States.

Thank you for your service. Reagan was the first president I was able to vote for. And I did so enthusiastically.

Even in these “blue” states there are large swaths of red that would eagerly join.

You mean I have to read the WHOLE thing? Can’t I just read a few lines, jump to conclusions, marshal my biases, and start arguing in the comments?

So far there are only 70 comments, and they come from people who have read the whole thing. Sometimes it’s helpful to read the whole thing.
