Patient in New York City Tests Positive for Ebola
NY Times ^

A doctor in New York City who recently returned from treating Ebola patients in Guinea tested positive for the Ebola virus Thursday, becoming the city’s first diagnosed case.

The doctor, Craig Spencer, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital on Thursday and placed in isolation while health care workers spread out across the city to trace anyone he might have come into contact with in recent days. A further test will be conducted by the federal Centers for Disease Control to confirm the initial test.

While officials have said they expected isolated cases of the disease to arrive in New York eventually, and had been preparing for this moment for months, the first case highlighted the challenges surrounding containment of the virus, especially in a crowded metropolis.

"While officials have said they expected isolated cases of the disease to arrive in New York eventually..."

Well, if the president cared about the welfare of the citizens of the US, these cases WOULD NEVER ARRIVE.

“It’s now in six west African countries and has made it to America, Norway, Germany, the UK, France, and Spain.”

But it isn’t really spreading. These are isolated incidents caused by the patients, It is hard to catch, you can’t get it in an airplane or on a bus. This is all hysteria......./s

You can’t get ebola from going to a bowling alley. However, if you have ebola you probably don’t want to go to a bowling alley and put others at risk of infecting others.

I think he may have bought a bowling alley.

And an Uber car.

Certainly he’s won a bout with the lawyers representing the owners of those items.

Course, if he’s got insurance and the gf kills him they may both get *some* sort of payout on that.

It’s NYC, hit men ARE cheaper...

Even as the authorities worked to confirm that Mr. Spencer was infected with Ebola, it emerged that he traveled from Manhattan to Brooklyn on the subway on Wednesday night,..

Mr. Spencer? Make that Dr. Spencer, Ebola doctor, the very type of person who must be monitored and should not be running around on public transit.

“it emerged that he traveled from Manhattan to Brooklyn on the subway on Wednesday night, when he went to a bowling alley and then took a taxi home.”

It is true that the first symptom of ebola is the overwhelming urge to use public transportation.

“New York has mobilized not only a world class health department, but has full engagement of many other agencies that need to be on the response team,” he [De Blasio]. said.

They are so screwed.

you forgot one that the intelligentsia have been peddling the last month. You have to let those with ebola spread the disease so it can be stopped.

"because of the precautions that need to be taken when drawing blood and treating a person possibly sick with Ebola, it took until late in the evening to confirm the diagnosis.>p? "But doctors said that even before the results came in, it seemed likely that he was infected. Symptoms usually occur within eight to 10 days of infection and Dr. Spencer was home nine days when he reported feeling ill."

Prayers for Doctor Spencer. I truly hope he survives.

NYC and Brooklyn have a lot of work to do now, identifying the apparently many others that came in contact with him. This is one huge cluster the altruistic doctor caused.

All: does anybody know exactly how many confirmed Ebola cases there have been in the US so far?

I count 3, with Duncan as Patient 0, then the 2 nurses, one of whom has now been pronounced free of the disease.

So is this another confirmed case? How many other confirmed cases have there been beyond the initial 3?

Have they nipped this thing in the bud yet or not?

Two things could halt this Ebola infection entry into the USA, immediately.

One, immediately, with no exceptions, USA, travel visa’s will not be issued by any American embassy or consulate in any of the Ebola infected countries to any citizen of such country seeking travel to the USA!!! A foreign person without an approved USA visa cannot enter the country!!!

Two, all American citizens will be resticted from flying to and from Ebola infected countries on commercial “airline” aircraft. Only USA military aircraft & NGO aircraft movements will be approved to move Americans in and out of those countries. Any American coming into any USA port of entry going through USA customs will be put in immediate quarantine for three months duration, if they came from an Ebola infected area..period!!!

As a final precaution, all foreign govenments across the world will be notified, by USA state department, that any citizen trying travel to the USA carrying a passport from and ebola infected country will be denied boarding and will be immediately returned to their country of orgin!!!

These actions effectively ban any movement into the USA by Ebola infected patients, both foreign and American!!

"He told the authorities that he did not believe the protective gear he wore while working with Ebola patients had been breached but had been monitoring his own health."

A) NOT GOOD ENOUGH. If a trained physician cannot self-monitor and sound the alarm at the first onset of symptoms, how can the random individual do as good (or poor) of a job. Note too that he was feeling peckisn but still went out on public transportation. He was educated enough to know better. What about the uneducated stream of 150 a day? Will they know better and self-monitor too?

B) Note that the article has someone at the hospital wondering why he waited until his temp hit 103° [hint: it isn't a river in Egypt].

C) I wonder what prompted the doc to self monitor if there wasn't a breach? Methinks there's more to this than is being reported.

But doctors said that even before the results came in, it seemed likely that he was infected. Symptoms usually occur within eight to 10 days of infection and Dr. Spencer was home nine days when he reported feeling ill.

D) Home 9 days when he started feeling sick? The paragraph from the article makes it sound like he was infected on his last day in the country. LET'S HOPE IT DIDN'T HAPPEN IN THE DEPARTURE LOUNGE ON ON THE FLIGHT HOME!!!

E) If Obama is worried about the suspension of air travel impacting the economy of these African nations (what, their tourist economy???), then rent the gosh darned airport hotel and use it as a departure quarantine for 21 days (or use the WHO's 42 day metric).

“. . . officials have said they expected isolated cases of the disease to arrive in New York eventually.”

I guess that happened a little sooner than expected. What a surprise. This doctor landed stateside on Oct. 14th from an infected country. He used the subway system, went bowling. He should have been quarantined immediately in a private jet before flying and then quarantined here for at least 21 days.

I wonder if he self quarantined himself,

...

After his fever spiked according to a previous article. He should have been in a real quarantine.
