The wedding of Amal Alamuddin to George Clooney in Venice has been one of the most talked about events of 2014. Amal, who is a prominent human rights lawyer in the UK, caused a certain amount of controversy due to her decision to take Clooney's last name as her own. Furthermore, unlike many women with professional careers, she will also professionally be known as 'Amal Clooney' instead of 'Amal Alamuddin'.
Research conducted by YouGov shows that most Americans don't think that women should feel they need to take their husband's last name. Overall, most Americans (57%) think that a woman should take whichever name she wants after she gets married, while 31% think that she should take her husband's last name. 6% think that hyphenation is the way to go, while 3% think women ought to keep their own names. Opinions on whether or not a woman should take her husband's last name are fairly consistent regardless of demographic grouping.
There is variation along party lines. Only 18% of Democrats say that women should take their husband's last names, while 65% think that she should do whatever she wants and 15% support either hyphenation or her keeping the original name. Among Republican voters, however, support for saying that women should take their husband's last names is far higher. 47% of Republicans think that a newly married woman should change her name to her husband's, the exact same percentage who say that a woman should take whichever name she wants (47%).

I would not have married a woman who would not take my last name.
This was a big issue for women’s lib back in the day.
Hillary made waves in Arkansas in the ‘70s because she didn’t become Hillary Clinton when she married Bill.
They don’t want to take their husbands name because that implies the woman is property.
So she keeps her dads name.
By who?
Im calling BS..
Progressive women are upset with Amal Clooney for doing what she wants.
Dittos
One must have one's priorities straight.
So did my wife.
Fashion comes and goes. Women keeping their name was the fashion in the early 80's.
Which name do lesbians keep?
Women who use two last names are pains in the ass. They are special. They are high maintenance princesses. I don’t care which name they use, I just wish they would make up their minds (if they can) and settle on one name. Oh, and they can open their own damn door by themselves.
Maybe they swap names??
But if she keeps her dads name, doesn’t that imply the daughter is her dad’s property???
Then liberal females should not keep a maiden name because that surname came from a patriarchal system. Liberal females should change their last names, not due to marriage but to throw off the vestiges of patriarchy.
I do find it interesting, how much consternation this topic causes.
Or show business.
Or authors.
“I would not have married a woman who would not take my last name.”
Deal breaker for me, also.
I teach in an inner city high school. The girls put their last names on thier babies’ birth certificates. This way, baby mama gets all the Big Gov bennies and her baby daddy can throw some cash her way when he feels like it. The outcome? We are one generation away from inbreeding. Seriously. I had two sisters that, by their senior years, each had two sons. The father of both of the sisters’ first baby is the same guy. The father of both of the sisters’ second baby was the first father’s brother. Figure that out. One baby daddy is dead. I think the first.
