Paying Taxes and Going to Jail Like Adults; Teens Deserve the Right to Vote, Too (Daily Beast)
The Daily Beast ^ | 10/06/14 | Jillian Keenan

Posted on 10/21/2014 2:26:08 PM PDT by Faith Presses On

Right now, millions of Americans are disenfranchised by our political process. They can pay taxes and contribute to social security, but they can’t vote. They can be sentenced to life in prison, but they can’t vote. Every day, their bodies, lives and futures are affected by politicians and policies they did not choose. Who am I talking about? Felons? Guess again.

We need to lower the voting age.

This is a prime moment to ask ourselves whether our voting system is yet fully equitable. Last month, Scotland made history when, for the first time in British politics, 16- and 17-year olds were allowed to vote in its independence referendum. Last year, Takoma Park in Maryland took a similar step when it allowed 16- and 17-year-olds to vote in municipal elections. That’s progress, but those steps don’t go far enough. In the forthcoming national midterm elections—and in all elections throughout the United States—teenagers deserve the right to vote. Seriously.

Okay, not all teenagers. Only the ones who can work and pay taxes on their employment—which the Department of Labor says is anyone over the age of 14. (Sorry, 13-year-olds.) Taxes are an obvious benchmark, since right now, employed teenagers are literally subjected to taxation without representation.

I always told my kids, and now my grandkids, they have their right to an opinion but no right to vote.

Heh! Watch them change their tune quick when someone offers:
“Change the age for voting? Okay, then also change the age to buy a firearm.”

Maybe this idiot should get himself a copy of “Wild in the Streets” and watch it just to see what could go wrong when children are allowed to vote.

“Paying Taxes and Going to Jail Like Adults”

Most kids to make enough to pay anything. They cant even work more than a few hours anyway.

Most kids who go to kiddy prison are out at 18 as a rule, and their records are erased.

So f*%@# yourself, DB.

We need to lower the voting age.

Screw that. We need to raise the voting age back to 21.

The voting age was lowered from 21 to 18 during the Vietnam war based on the argument that if 18-20 year olds were old enough to be drafted then they were old enough to vote. Well guess what? No one has been drafted since 1973.

Since then, the drinking age throughout the US has been raised from 18 to 21. If they are not old enough to drink then they are not old enough to vote.

Only one group of people should be allowed to vote:

Men, who are married to one woman, who have children, and who live with the mother of all their children.

What this moron is saying is that because a 14-year-old can hack an entire family to death with an ax, and rape half of them, and thus go to jail for life, all 14-year-olds should be allowed to vote.

Since when does some group of people obtain rights because some of them prove to be monsters?

It depends on the definition of “equitable”. If that means that a person whose labor feeds a surplus that benefits others should have a voice in its disposition, then sure. If it means that every puppy with his mouth on his Momma’s teat has a say in how she produces the milk, then no.

I have no problem with married women voting. A majority of married women vote for conservatives just like married men.

It is single women who look to the government to be their sugar daddy that are the problem.

As a teen, I disagree. It’s obviously another ploy to get stupid young people to vote Democrat. Raise the minimum voting age to 30.

This bachelor would have to find a little fault with that, given that I'm already supporting the little SOBs. I've served my country in the military, never missed a single tax bill, paid up on school liens that offer me no personal benefit, and now you suggest that I have no right to a say in how my own income is disbursed?

I'll be polite: the idea is not a good one.

I think isntead of having 16,18,21 as ages that certain things are gained we should just make everything start at either 18 or 20 and be done with it...

You can get a scholl permit to drive, but a reali DL won’t be granted until you are 18 or 20 and the drinking age is the same as the draft age and voting age...

Bingo! Use their argument against them. If you work and pay taxes, you vote.

I was not well-enough informed nor had a complete worldview at 14. Really not until about 20. I was able to vote at 18. Didn’t get it right until 20.

i saw the AND btwn work and taxes.

its a good thought but i think it needs one more tweak.

you need to be able to let adults who are retired be able to vote. lots of people of all ages are retired for different reasons, largely because of age, but some because they’re well off, some for genuine disability. they still pay taxes on a number of things, but may not have job income.
