It’s crazy. “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.” I reckon those who can’t teach either are then deemed close enough for government work.

There is actually some truth to that I am afraid, but I’d change it to “are employed by” the government

This currently derogatory term comes from World War II, when something was "good enough for Government work", it meant it could pass the most rigorous of standards. It was a mark of pride. It's a prime example of how far we have fallen in the USA in 70 short years.
