As he prepares to leave office, Governor Deval Patrick is quietly transferring 500 of his managers into the state public employee union, a move that will qualify them for a series of 3 percent raises and insulate them from firing when the next governor takes over.
Rolling the managers into the 22,000-member union will effectively protect them from any house-cleaning that might occur when the next governor takes office in January a particular likelihood if Republican Charlie Baker were to take over after eight years of Democratic leadership.
Union employees generally have to be removed for cause, while managers serve at will.
With just a couple of months to go in the current administration, this has the whiff of a job protection action just before the governor leaves office,

It’s crazy. “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.” I reckon those who can’t teach either are then deemed close enough for government work.
Only when we all learn to love Big Brother.
At heart, even the most wealthy and powerful leftists have the MOOCHER mentality.
It must be in their DNA.
Their entire existence centers on how much can be sqeezed from taxpayers to enrich themselves, their fellow leftists and their loyal victim groups.
If the governor can move the employees into the union, can the governor move them out of the union?
So frustrating, government workers suck, and government unions allow them to suck and to stay employed and get raises and retire early.
Gov must be shrunk. There is NO CORRELATION BETWEEN JOB PERFORMANCE AND CAREER ADVANCEMENT/PERSONAL WEALTH in government.
Considering how the [latest] current mess has exposed the complete incompetence of big government to even the LIV contingent, that may be a harder sell than usual. Would be nice.
How will the government function if management and labor are on the same side?
Having unions in government made no sense from the beginning. Government was better off under the patronage system. But to have your managers be part of the union is going to cause chaos. There will be no breaks on a system that is already out of control.
Were they capitalists with good product, they wouldn’t have to squeeze anything. But, you can’t cure a taker, well, death will...
There is actually some truth to that I am afraid, but I’d change it to “are employed by” the government
If I were elected governor, I would assign all 500 of these new managers to my newly established Ebola clean-up task force. I would give each an official t-shirt and a roll of paper towels and send them to the airport. Their job will be to clean up the vomit left by any passengers.
With regards to Patrick, I would bring charges of corruption against him. As many charges as I can think up. And let Patrick spend the next 10 years in court.
....and those that can't tech are administrators.
(rim-shot)....Community Organizers.
Why is government unionized?
Why are so many levels, of corrupt government unionized, from the local, state and fed levels?
This is totally insane people.
Government was allowed to become totally unionized, out of control and corrupt.
And people now wonder why everything is so f*** up?
Those who cant, teach.
.....and those that can' teach become administrators ....
...and those that can't administrate ....become...
.....(rim-shot)....Community Organizers.
(now I got it after more coffee)
People here bitch about unions, until ya tell um there are now more unionized corrupt government employees at all levels, than there is in entire private sector America.
Spit*
Yes, if they can’t be fired and are well-paid, they should have to see to their own retirement. I think about that shit too much and it makes my head hurt, seriously.
Ummm. Until? That just makes it worse.
