Rand Paul won his Senate seat without winning any notable amount of the black vote. In a match up with Hillary Clinton, he’s currently set to take 15% of the black vote. That’s much better than Mitt Romney, but he’s up against Hillary Clinton. Not Barack Obama.
And his MSNBC comments about letting businesses discriminate against black people haven’t been in autoplay for eight months, which they would be if he ever won the primaries. After that, he would be lucky to get 1 percent no matter how many trips he makes to Ferguson.
So his constant chatter about winning minority votes remains hypothetical pandering. He hasn’t actually won those votes.
WOLF BLITZER: If you run for president, Senator, you think it’s possible you could get some sizable African-American support?
RAND PAUL: I think if we don’t, we won’t ever win again. We’re a very diverse country. But if Republicans don’t go out and compete for African-American votes, don’t go out and compete for the Hispanic vote and the Asian-American vote, we won’t win again in our country because the country is a diverse country now and we can’t have one party that monopolizes the various ethnic group votes. So, we do have to compete and if I do it, I plan on competing for all votes.
There’s a difference between competing and pandering. More to the point, this appeal isn’t really pitched to black voters, it’s aimed at convincing establishment Republicans that he can win over those voters in a general election.
Can he? Christie is currently at 13 percent of the black vote against Hillary. Paul is at 15 percent. So to some degree, his campaign has worked, but it’s a really small and untested degree.
Paul’s outreach efforts, like McCain’s candidacy, is being propped up by a smiling media which finds his Republican bashing narrative useful. And that lets him pile up some numbers until they bring the hammer down and when your father is slightly to the left of David Duke and you went on MSNBC to effectively suggest abolishing the Civil Rights Act, the media won’t even have to strain hard to do it.
But Paul does score 21 percent of the votes of those who identify as liberal. Christie only pulls in 19 percent.
The black people I know tend to have very conservative social views...they are not for gay marriage....not for legalization of pot...nor open borders.
The problem w/ most R’s are that they shoot themselves in the foot w/ black voters because the R’s try to pander and come across so fake. The R’s that have figured out how to have an authentic message win over all voters...white, black...even Hispanic voters.
But this whole concern about only saying the ‘right’ thing..saying a phrase that has been ‘tested’ comes across very badly. Then there are the pol’s who are too afraid to even have open forums anymore.
I’m sick and tired of our ‘public’ officials hiding behind the ‘safe’ and most often closed town hall meetings. Never going to capture the public when you hide. The R party is never going to capture the majority of the public if it continues to pander. Need to stand for something.
ridiculous! Unless there was some renaissance of logic in the black community we haven't detected yet
Mia Love?
Who care if Republicans win unless they stand for what will save society and the nation. If Republicans have to do the wrong thing to get black votes then they have achieved nothing good by winning. They just become part of the fall.
Very true
another...
Well, yes they can!
Roughly 100 MILLION otherwise eligible Americans did not vote in 1012.
Republicans, the Stupid Party, have made no, zip, zero, nada effort to get them to the polls on November 4!
And, they wonder why they lose elections?
Rand Paul's disastrous interview on Maddow ~ 2011.
He was completely unprepared to deal with her on cam, yet he went on the show just to walk into a predictable ambush.
Then he later repudiated his own comments.
He's been pandering ever since.
Why should your dog learn that? He has you trained to do it.
Yes my dog has me well trained.
if it is true as RP says then Republicans can’t win no matter what they do.
The GOPe could only conceivably win the black vote by out-pandering the left, in which case, why bother? Of course, they’ve already trial-tested that strategy in Mississippi.
I’ve been thinking that a good many of the GOPe are infiltrators. Why not, it’s not like the left hasn’t successfully used that exact same strategy infiltrating to undermine and/or control, the media, academia, nominal Christianity, and most recently the military. Why not use it on almost the only remaining roadblock to fully implementing their agenda-the opposition party?
Considering the way various politicos and media figures keep yammering about how so-and-so can’t win without the Hispanic vote, the black vote, the one-armed Polynesian lesbian vote, I’d say they’re not too concerned about the white vote, especially the white, Christian, heterosexual male vote. That’s good, because the way both parties are going, they’re not going to be getting it. They’ll need to fight each other to out-pander for all those “exotic” votes they’re so concerned about, since conservatives need not apply. Come to think of it, there aren’t many of them I’d want to give my vote and have “represent” me, they do a piss-poor job of representing anything resembling conservative values anyway.
I agree entirely!
I’m not voting for anyone simply because they are not the other guy.
You either earn my vote by representing via action values that are important to me, or you do not get my vote.
I am no longer vexed by the thought of oh if I don’t go vote for this one then that one will get in.
They are all the same.
As far as I am concerned representative government is a complete and utter failure, because people, for the most part, are liars by nature.
Then we’re screwed.
We’ve never had “the black vote.” What is Rand smoking?
A sizeable percentage of latins here do Not want others coming illegally
