  You wouldn’t know it from her sweet smile, but the reason why Nesrin Abdi carries a rifle is in case she needs to shoot herself dead.
  
  This, she explained matter-of-factly, would be preferable to being captured by the monsters of Islamic State. Nesrin, a 20-year-old medical student, is by all accounts a happy, well-educated, middle-class young woman with an infectious joy for life.
  
  In her home town of Kobane on the Syria-Turkey border, moments of joy are rare, but a photograph captures the triumphant moment three days ago when she was among Kurdish fighters who recaptured a strategic hill from the Islamic State invaders.
  
  The jihadis’ sinister black flag was torn down and replaced with a fluttering Kurdish red-and-yellow banner, marking what may well prove a symbolic turning point in the life-and-death struggle for the besieged town.
  
  
  But Nesrin, a doctor’s daughter who has joined an army of women battling to defend Kobane, is aware that every day could be her last.

I agree with you. Also, I must say, Kurdish women in particular have a very long history of fighting alongside men, when it is necessary. This is nothing new. Do I like it? Of course not. But these things happen, have happened, and often a necessity, not a whim or ‘nice thing to do’.

From what I've heard the only way you can tell the different between the Kurdish genders is that the MEN have the fuller mustaches and beards. A little bit of Kurdish humor as the Kurds DO intermarry.

Women fighting along side men means that their culture is doomed. Women can best fight from a control panel back at the base, aiming the bombs and drones at their targets.
In hand-to-hand combat women are dead meat. But before that they may be subject to gang-platoon-rape.
Combat is no place for women and SAD is the culture that requires them to be in combat fighting men.

Two more points to add: 1) I don’t care at all for the headline and the article, because it is written from a Western viewpoint and doesn’t put things in context. 2) I know for sure, most of these women fighters if they had to go and not be captured, and if had the means, they’ll take a few of those animal ISIS jihadis in the process with them. My heartfelt sorrow for these women and the Kurds in general.

The Kurds want their own country. But, it would entail getting some land from Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria, where Kurds now live. THAT will never, ever, happen. They are all Muslim, so they would PROBABLY feel better being in a Muslim country. I guess they are doomed to being angry and disenfranchised...in Syria, Turkey, Iran and Iran. No-win for everyone.

It's a no-win for the young angry ISIS/ISIL as well--as I see it.

Everyone will lose over there as there is NO WAY that modern Syria, Turkey, Iran and Iraq will implement the Koran as a way of life for THEIR 21st century. THAT is what these young, angry fanatics want: an ISLAMIC STATE. It AIN'T going to happen. If Saudi Arabia didn't do it, NO one will and the Saudis are the most vehement about Islam.

The Saudis ARE an Islamic state but now ALSO have PETROLEUM, natural gas AND Mecca. Obscene wealth and fervent faith don't often mix well. They CAN and they SHOULD but...

The Saudi Bedouin were some of God's poorest people on the earth. ALL THEY HAD was Islam. However, NOW they have all the petroleum and natural gas in the world. It's an interesting mix. [THAT is where we lived for FIVE YEARS.]

Saudi Arabia: Unlimited wealth AND the center of Islam = very interesting mix. ISIS/ISIL will do NO better!

YOU don't know the middle east. I do. We LIVED and worked there FIVE years and we traveled all over the middle and near east.
Our home in Saudi Arabia was 100 yards from the Persian Gulf. The local folks over THERE call it the ARABIAN GULF.

We (Saudis, Americans, Brits, Filippinos, Pakistanis, Indians, etc.) were as protected as the Saudi and American air forces could keep us.

ONE missile from Iraq, a couple of bombs from bombers or an offshore submarine bomb COULD have wiped out a lot of us. Our Air Force has been there since the early 1980's. At least that was the rumor. We never saw squat. We just trusted that all that petroleum and natural gas was worth protecting. They were.

I WILL pray for this young woman. I will pray that God protects her and gets her safely home to her family. THAT is all that I can do.

Don’t worry. Frankly I very much doubt any Kurdish person, man or woman, would care about that person who professes to have at some point lived 5 years in Saudi Arabia and traveled around the Gulf region, etc... The Kurds have much more important business to take care of, and I was just told they would consider her a troll.

In case you haven’t noticed, the Kurds are in dire straits in some regions over there and need every able-bodied adult to join the fight. WTH are you expecting if women like her? Like the Israelis, when the Kurds fight an enemy, they’re fighting literally for their lives and those of their families.
