A more accurate word would be “unencrypted” or the military term “in the clear”.

Yeah, if I was Russian and had a choice between submariner and farmer I would rather be growing cabbage in Petropavlovsk.

From what I’ve read of their maintenance protocols, a good possibility.

Hey!
Wasn’t Putin just warning the world that we shouldn’t be agitating nuclear power?
Is THIS an example of his “power”?

Sweden has been talking about joining NATO, how would this submarine event influence public opinion?

The socialist-government is only a couple of weeks into service. The government is against a membership. The former government wanted to join the NATO.

Of course, with the Russian conscript system some of the kids running that sub probably were farming cabbage in Petropavlovsk a few weeks ago.

In the Swedish detective series "Wallander" (not BBC), they did a show on the incident, but it was a US sub that was trapped and helped to escape by elements in the Swedish government, resulting in the death of a SW diver placing beacons for the sub.
Years later, a fisherman pulls up stuff...

The Soviets didn't have a problem knowing where there subs were.
As one Soviet admiral put it, "We just track the US P3s, and when they start circling, that's where our subs are.
To: gaijin
remember back about 25 years when the Swedes bottled up a Russian sub in a fjord and it was forced to surface? well 20 years later it turned out that sub DID have nuclear weapons on board and they DID target a city during that emergency.
This is similar to the plot from the 1965 movie "The Bedford Incident".

Well, that’s kind of sad. Like the Soviet factory system boiled down in one sentence: “we pretend to work, and they pretend to pay us.”
