The release of the "Pet Sounds" album signaled the Beach Boys departure from being a surf band and was also the first album that featured Glen Campbell as a bonafide member of the band. Some considered it Brian Wilson's emergence into insanity, but in retrospect it was his courage and genius that that made the album so great.

Berlioz set that as a cantata, not an opera, because the stagecraft of the era couldn't handle the quick cuts that he executes. The world had to wait for the movies to make that happen.
The scene near the end where the horseman Faust runs over the people praying at the shrine is classic.

Chuck Berry made an appearance on the Carson show - can't remember when it was - he damn near knocked Doc Severinsen out with his guitar.

Hey, Ms. B.
(GENTLE HUG) 'cos you may be in pain.
(CHASTE SMOOCH) 'cos I don't want to get a knuckle sandwich from your hubby!
How are you feeling?
I've been busy, and I'll have an essay to post on Monday, the first one I've done since 2005. In a few minutes, I'm off to see "Lone Survivor" on HBO.

From Mitch Leigh and Joe Darion's 1965 Broadway musical "Man of La Mancha", this was one of Glen's favorites which he revisited several times after this debut in 1968. It was always a part of his stage act.

Here's a Brian Wilson masterpiece from "Pet Sound's" that confused surf music fans and gave those of us with faith a glimpse of what would come to fruition almost 40 years later when Brian finally completed the "Smile" project. Brian's growing maturity as an artist and composer is on full display.
