The Justice Department second-raking official is preparing to step down, completing an exodus of top brass from the agency, according to published reports.
Deputy Attorney General James M. Cole would become the third member of the Justice Departments brain trust to announce his departure in recent weeks.
Attorney Gen. Eric Holder announced his departure in late September, though he has pledged to remain in office until his successor is in place. The White House has indicated that President Obama would not nominate anyone for the position untl after the November midterms.
Associate Attorney General Tony West, the third-ranking DOJ official, stepped down on Sept. 15, leaving the agency to become general counsel at PepsiCo.
As deputy attorney general, Cole has overseen day-to-day operations at the agency for nearly four years.
He was most visible on issues involving data collection and was closely involved with the agencys response to legalization of marijuana in some states. He has also been vocal about the Justice Departments willingness to pursue criminal cases against Wall Street banks.
Cole's departure, first reported by The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times , could not immediately be confirmed with Justice Department officials.
They at least don’t want to be around when the Ferguson thing cooks off, since they did help foment much of the unrest by convicting the officer sans any meaningful legal proceedings.
I’m trying to figure out what’s with the slow-motion resignation process.
Likely right. I would not want to be around to take the rap.
Obama will get a black eye if they all go at the same time. The top guy leaves, then his stooges snake out the door, hopefully unnoticed. Hearings for past transgressions are avoided and the news cycle moves on.
You nailed it.
It will be hard to replace the degree of EVIL of Holder & Co, but Obama can do it.
I agree, and if 0bama nominates that weasel Tom Perez for AG that’ll prove it.
That's a joke, right?
Yeah, on the order of "Jumbo Shrimp".
Bump :-)
Lot of people on Death Row would like to resign, since when was resignation an option in criminal proceedings?
> Rats abandoning a sinking administration?
First Holder now this? Hmm smells like something very rotten is stinking up the Justus Department. I bet they know something and it’s not good.
Have to wonder if it's not related to the Fast and Furious documents.
Well, it is October. He was probably not looking forrward to all the leaves falling from the trees.
Rats abandoning a stinking sh!t?
Holder’s “brain trust”? The very definition of oxymoron I believe, with emphasis on the “moron” part.
Yes, isn’t there an order from a judge that documents (or a list thereof) has to be submitted on 10/22 related to F&F?
Yep. And the DoJ lawyers did everything they could to prevent it. Whatever is in there, somebody wanted to keep buried.
