Sadly, most of the store brands are produced by the same company as the major brands. I received a tour of the Stokley company and saw cans of string beans whizzing by so fast, all you could discern was the green color of the labels. Then, without pause, the labels turn red. When I asked what happened, the tour guide said they switched to a private label. I asked: "Same beans?". Answer: "Yes". Clearly, store brands could be different, but often aren't.
You’ll notice a difference; I don’t know how far up the chain General Mills reaches (or if they are just another customer of the same supplier).
“Sadly, most of the store brands are produced by the same company as the major brands”
I think thats true of some brands, some food products, but not of others. The store brands seem to be inferior in taste and quality compared to the major brands.
For example I like chef boyardee canned spaghetti. Not too long ago I decided to buy the cheaper store brand canned spaghetti instead in order to save some money. It turned out to be horrible in comparison to chef boyardee. And there seemed to be a little more sauce and less spaghetti too.
The product is often the same...HOWEVER..the “name” brand is paying the freight for advertising; hence the lower price on the generics.
So, if people switch to store brands...even if the product is made by General Mills it will “temporarily” hit their profits. Of course, they will just pass along the costs thus increasing the price of the generic versions within a few months. Can’t have the “shareholders” suffer a loss due to a revolt by the gauche peasants.
There is no real way to destroy or to compete with these behemoth companies..they own us (and more importantly, they own the Politicians).

The same thing goes for clothes, and many other non-clothes items. It probably will make highbrow shoppers upset to know this, but, many of those “high-dollar, “Brand Name” clothing items they pride themselves on come from the same pile as the lesser-priced ones. Prior to labeling. Personally, I think Satan exploits the proud in this.
