What defense do we have against Ebola, one of the worlds deadliest disease? Light-zapping robots, thats what.
The robot kills viruses and bacteria uses ultraviolet light to destroying a viruss or bacterias DNA.
I know what youre thinking UV light is all around us. And youd be right. The suns rays are made up of three different kind of ultraviolet light. The first two, UV-A and UV-B, shine onto the planet and are responsible for making people tan as well as giving other sunburns and even skin cancers.
But the ozone layer surrounding Earth blocks UV-C. Because this light doesnt exist in the natural world below the ozone layer, organisms have not evolved genetic mechanisms to deal with it. Thats where Xenex comes in. The robot pulses UV-C light for five minutes in a given location, such as a patients hospital room. When the light encounters bacteria or viruses, it damages their DNA, essentially disabling the pathogen and killing it.

Hospitals have known about UV light’s germ killing ability for decades. And you don’t need a robot, though that could be better.
I want one for Christmas.
Snake oil or the answer to Ebola? Do they have a machine for Obala? That’s one we need too. .
That “snake oil” you are talking about is used around the country to purify water.
All the water at your tap has been treated by UV Light.
It’s cheap, practically free, and it can’t be patent.
Thus, why the Big Pharmaceutical (modern day Quacks) companies DO NOT want you to know about it.
They don’t want to let a crisis go to waste. That could be billions in their shimmy pockets.
Why can’t there be a UV-Light flexible tube that xan be inserted inside the body and zap away the Ebola or any deadly cooties?
“Because this light doesnt exist in the natural world below the ozone layer, organisms have not evolved genetic mechanisms to deal with it.”
Does this make it a potential weapon as well?
It mutates all DNA. Not specific to virus at all.
You don’t want one inside your body.
Search for ‘UV sterilizer’ on Amazon. Some friggen news.
Wow it’s got all types of uses! 22 Departments on Amazon. Look to the left side of the screen to see all the categories.
Pathetically Hilarious - you sound like a commercial for Blue Emu.
UV is tricky. It will make most plastic materials brown and the discoloration is permanent. UV C is extremely hazardous and not to be trifled with.
And it is effective only for line-of-sight where any critters not in direct illumination will live on. Thats what the makers of these robots DO NOT want you to know about.
Not all water treatment uses UV some either uses chlorine or both UV and/or chlorine to kill bacteria from stage 3 of the treatment process.
You can buy germicidal bulbs online.
UV can be used to purify blood by cycling it through a UV source and putting it back. It kills the germs in the blood.
It kills the germs in the blood.
+++++++
Sounds like a good testing ground for that would be San Francisco.
UV light also helps mutation.. so if it doesn’t kill everything, it could help the surviving virus to mutate
I had the same thought—run their blood through a machine that would kill the virus.
It was explained to me that by the time you realize someone is infected, the virus has attacked too many tissues.
I saw an article about this process. Not with robots, but with rotating light stands. They looked like those laser things CSI folks use to map a room. Being at three heights and in three locations, the UV lights get into the corners and in the shadows.
Our hospital got one of these a few months ago. We use it in rooms that had patients with C.Diff. Kills the spores.
Outstanding! I hope it works on Ebola.
