Douglas Carswell made history in Great Britain tonight. He becomes the first fourth party MP to be elected to the House Of Commons. The Conservatives came in second in the Clacton riding by-election.

Also, note the insanely close result in a Labour held seat that was also up!
Labour Liz McInnes, 11,633 (41%)

Has a member of Congress done this — resign and then ask the voters to return them as a member of their new party — in the past 30 years? I don’t recall anyone since Phil Gramm.

He isn’t the first fourth party candidate to win a seat, there have always been other parties like Plaid Cymru, SNP, the Northern Irish MPs and Brighton (notoriously liberal and the UK equivalent of San Fransisco) elected a Green candidate at the 2010 general election.
