There’s already been at least one case of transmission outside Africa, of course: The nurse in Spain caught the virus from a sick patient who’d been hospitalized in Madrid. If it’s confirmed that he knew Thomas Duncan, this would be the second case.
Where, you ask, did the authorities encounter this mystery man exhibiting Ebola-like symptoms? Why, at a local health clinic in Frisco, Texas. Unwitting patients and staffers who were inside the clinic with him are now being held and examined, all apparently because this guy didn’t think to call the CDC or the police from home and tell them what was going on.
The patient, dressed in shorts and wearing a surgical mask and a plastic head covering, just walked out of the facility and into the ambulance, which had been covered in plastic. That patient will likely transported to Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, where Thomas Eric Duncan was hospitalized.
We are working to determine if this person is among the 48 people the Centers for Disease Control is monitoring. So far there has been no comment from the CDC, which already had a 3 p.m. press conference scheduled.
There are also conflicting reports concerning the patient. Frisco officials earlier said he claimed to have had contact with Thomas Eric Duncan, but Care Now says he told them hed been to Africa.
Maybe not a case of transmission inside the U.S. then? If he did catch the bug from Duncan, I’m especially keen to know how. Assuming he’s not a family member who spent long hours with Duncan in his Dallas apartment after he arrived in the U.S., his contact with him was probably fairly limited and indirect. How do you catch Ebola under those circumstances?
As for the threat posed by the mystery man to people inside the clinic, here’s a harrowing story via Vox of how Spain handled the nurse’s first hours with the disease.
According to Spanish press reports quoting the Spanish nurses union, Romero called Carlos III hospital several times between September 30 and October 2 when her fever finally hit the 38.6 threshold. Still, it took until October 6 when she had become so deathly ill she was begging for an Ebola test before anyone at the hospital where she worked reportedly reacted. Then, rather than immediately isolating her and rushing her to the special ward used to treat the previous Ebola patients, they told her to go to the nearby emergency room at Alcorcón, where press reports say she sat in the public waiting room for several hours absent of any protective gear. I think I have Ebola, she reportedly told anyone who would listen. But no one took notice until her first test came back positive. By then, dripping with fevered sweat, she would have been inarguably contagious.
Allegedly, she called her doctor on September 30th to tell him she was running a slight fever — and added that she had helped treat one of the missionaries who had died of Ebola just a week or two previously. The doctor told her to take some aspirin and keep in touch. She was out and about for days afterward, using public transportation and even taking a civil-service exam along with 20,000 other people. Another nurse who treated the missionary is now exhibiting a low-grade fever herself and has been quarantined. Says the Daily Beast, “It is highly likely that Romero will have infected at least one other person, probably her husband, because she was not isolated immediately.”
The CDC presser on the Frisco patient is starting soon. Stand by for updates. While we wait, via the Federalist, here’s a reminder that wanting to quarantine Ebola by temporarily blocking people from countries stricken by it from entering the U.S. is racist.
Update: The plot thickens.
NBC 5 has confirmed the person being transported to the hospital is an employee with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office who was in Duncan’s apartment.
So the mystery man did have contact with Duncan, perhaps indirectly. But he also traveled to Africa recently, per what the CareNow spokesman said above? Huh?
Update: Yikes.
The 2nd patient who may or may not have contacted Ebola was not one of the 48 who was under surveillance

Update: Either the mystery man doesn’t have Ebola or else the disease is spread more easily than people think.
We were told by federal officials, county officials that you would have to come in direct contact with Duncan or direct contact with bodily fluids, and he did not, said Monnigs son, Logan about the possibility of his dad contracting Ebola. Logan said its a very scary time for his family, but they do not expect that his dad will test positive for the virus…
He was in the apartment for 30 minutes, which we were told is no chance to contact the virus, said Logan.
Nah, they are just allowing plastic and petro-chemicals in our food while the chemicals are banned for those purposes in nearly every other country.
LOL!
Those look photoshopped, but I’ll bet you someone’s printing those bumper stickers as we speak.
I don’t know how to tell if they are or not...but enough they’re out there ...and I do think we’ll see some...although this Ebola thing is so bad maybe nobody wants that on their vehicle.
I don't know. Folks are becoming unhinged over this Ebola threat. They might bite their tongues when it comes to Obama's other shenanigans, but this thing is as personal as it gets.
Have you been reading the comments at news articles around the web? Holy moly --- people are on fire about Obama keeping the borders and the air routes open to this menace (and others).
I can't believe that he and his handlers are so completely tone deaf to what Americans are screaming. He's obviously doubling down on his ideological agenda, but now it's going to have a direct and almost immediate impact on the lives of American citizens.
The man simply lives in a fantasy world, and does not see or hear what's going on right in front of his face. If there are any more deaths in the U.S. from this, or if a real outbreak of Ebola occurs here, he may wind up facing removal by Congress on grounds of unfitness to hold office.
The guy's a walking talking crisis -- but we Freepers knew that from day one.
Barry always makes decisions based on his political view from one moment to the other...and he reacts or responds according to that changing wind....that's all he knows.
You're right...this is very personal to people, but Barry isn't tuned in to any people but those who move his political agenda. Remember, he thinks the public isn't tuned into what's going on....and when they do get wind he knows he can drag his feet and simply “talk” the walk. It's worked for him so far.
Both Obama’s see the public as foolish children....”Telling us to “eat cake” or “stop being mad so often”....”calm down” etc. etc. Neither has ‘any’ concept they work for the public... Most in Washington don't. It's 'their show down there', and the World Stage their playground. We are significant only to produce two things when needed...Money and votes...but mostly money.
Actually Washington is much like Hollywood...divorced from the people until they make a movie or star in a show that requires viewers. Otherwise they're in their own world of glitz and glamor, drugs and sexual encounters.
I knew we'd be living a bad dream with these two..but I sure didn't think it was going to be a terror driven, unending nightmare! One thing though...when Obama says he's going to do something that takes from this country, no matter how he frames it, be sure he will do so one way or another....we just do't realize it when it happens because he presents it another way.
In my mind...the Focus Africa Summit = Ebola, which he said would be his administrations no.1# agenda this year...and here we are.
“Reston-through the ventilation system?”
Like Bubba, when he checked his gas level with a match - It went airborne.
;-)
Now, killing 500 monkeys would be seen is far too many American neighborhoods as American raised “Jungle Meat” - raised in the concrete jungle, too.
This article is a great example of poor journalism and passing on rumors disguised as news.
Very early factual reports identified the man as a Dallas County Deputy Sheriff who had entered the apartment on official duty... No mention in any other report of him having been in Africa.. total unfounded rumor in my opinion.
And Ebola most certainly can be caught from any contaminated surface in that apartment...
Others entered that apartment foolishly without any protection... we’ll see what comes of all this foolishess.
obama won’t do it unless there are 4 million people in D.C. screaming at him
But what should be done and should have been done is to stop across the board issuing VISAS to West Africans to come to America PERIOD.
Duncan came to America via Brussels, Belgium...
Reports persist that the paperwork was filled out in that manner. I’ve speculated that Deputy Monnig did it intentionally to make certain he was admitted for treatment and not turned away as was Duncan, if he actually did answer those questions as reported.
Anyone with any sense would go to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Having sense knowing that is a place that can save you if anyone can.
Stop issuing VISAS to West Africans — that is how you stop it ... but obama is not going to do that — he doesn’t care..
STOP ISSUANCE OF VISAS TO WEST AFRICANS

BLOCK VISAS BEING GRANTED TO PEOPLE IN WEST AFRICAN NATIONS.
WE DON’T WANT TO EVEN BE EXPOSED TO THE EBOLA VIRUS...

What's up my brother.
Yes Reston was a scary episode. Those who were dealing with it were extremely fortunate that it wasn't a more virulent, human-friendly form (like Ebola Zaire) or we would likely have had a devastating outbreak right down the road from a major city - DC no less.
USAMRIID also had control monkeys that contracted Ebola with no physical contact whatsoever, yet we keep hearing you can only contact it via direct contact with an infected individual's body fluids.
Ignorance kills. So do lies.
For the deeply heartfelt and compassionate apology after death.
“All hell is about to break loose, and the enemy within will be annihilated in the process.”
I agree in theory, I’m not fully on board in principle. I think the Thomas Duncan incident will be a watershed moment that leads to a populist movement to restrict illegal immigration and bring some sanity to our borders. It will take time, but the tide will turn.
He’ll spend eternity in hell. There’s that at least.

Disinformation to prevent panic?
Make people think as long as they haven’t been to Africa they’ll be safe?
