I even heard poor Excalibur the dog was put down in Spain - he belonged to the Spanish nurse that somehow contracted ebola even though she took every precaution possible.

Well, 100% of the dogs in an African outbreak a few years ago tested positive for the virus, which they can carry but which does not affect them (like the fruit bats). Dogs are scavengers, and if that dog was infected and another dog ate something left by it, you’d be spreading it around pretty fast. The dog lived very closely with its owners, and I’m sure the Ebola-infected owner shared food with it, etc.
