Kansas Senate Candidate Orman: I Could 'Absolutely' Switch Parties After Picking Senate Side
NBC News ^ | 10/06/2014

Independent Greg Orman says he could change parties even after he has allied himself with Democrats or Republicans if he wins the Kansas Senate election in November.

In an exclusive interview with NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell, Orman says he would initially caucus with whichever party has majority control in the Senate, because “it’s in the best interests of the voters of Kansas that they have a senator in the majority.”

But, he added, he wouldn’t limit himself to an alliance with one party over the other, especially if the Senate is evenly split.

“If four or five months goes by, and it's clear they're engaged in the same old partisan politics, we'll be able to change our allegiances and work with the other side,” he said. “And I think that's a really strong and important tool, to hold the Senate accountable for actually getting something done.”

Asked by O’Donnell if he can envision switching parties once he arrives in Washington, Orman responded that he “absolutely” can.

“Ultimately, this is about solving problems. This is about the voters of Kansas saying - the status quo doesn't work anymore,” he said.

If he wins the November election, Orman can keep the label of independent, but he must choose to caucus with one party to carry out the day-to-day duties -- like service on Senate committees -- that make senators effective as they seek to serve their constituents.

IOW, he is GOPe.

Wrong. He expects the Dems to retain the Senate, so his promise to caucus with the majority party is code for "I'm really a democrat". However he has to hedge his bet in the case the GOP takes over the Senate. Hence he makes a statement about being willing to switch after a couple of months.

You can see this when you listen to his rationale. Being with the majority is good for Kansas as it lets him get things done. So why should that change in a couple of months? Well, it must be if he gets a majority other than he expects and it isnt about being in the majority at all, really. Which it isn't.

You make a good point about the Republicans if they win the majority - they shouldn’t accept him in their caucus
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

They don’t have the privilege of making that call. Whatever caucus he chooses, has to accept him.

I cannot believe that Kansas voters would go for this....

Oh really? Well, they’ve been sending a non-Kansan, whose legal residence is in Virginia, to the Senate for years, AND...... who by his own admission only comes to Kansas when he has an opponent. So, go figure.

Are there really idiots who fall for this cr*p?
____________________________________________________________

Well, if you believe the polls, about 46 percent of the people in Kansas are falling for it. Not saying they’re idiots, but according to your statement above, I guess they are.
