NEW YORK (AP) As same-sex marriage cases cascade through the federal courts, Republican politicians find themselves awkwardly split into three camps.
There's a small but growing number who favor legalizing gay marriage, a hard-core faction that continues to denounce it, and a sizable group in between that seems to wish the issue would disappear.
At one end of the spectrum, at least eight GOP members of Congress have endorsed same-sex marriage, and two openly gay GOP candidates for the House hope to join them.
In Massachusetts, Richard Tisei has run ads featuring his husband. In California, Carl DeMaio ran an ad showing him and his long-term partner in San Diego's gay-pride parade.
On the other flank, conservative Republicans in Congress have introduced legislation seeking to protect states from being forced to recognize same-sex marriages. One of those lawmakers is Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, a potential presidential contender who drew applause at a recent conservative gathering by saying, "We stand for marriage," and insisting that his party not shy away from "family values."
Then there's the large group in middle, not ready to embrace same-sex marriage but wary of antagonizing its supporters, including what polls suggest is a solid majority of Republicans under age 30.
Several GOP governors fit into this category, including Chris Christie of New Jersey, Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania, Susana Martinez of New Mexico and Brian Sandoval of Nevada. Each decided within the past year to back away from all-out legal fights against gay marriage.

I agree, the gay marriage issue has been lost. Fight winnable issues and focus on strengthen and promoting heterosexual marriages.
Marriage is a God-ordained, God-given institution, the first and most important one, when it comes to preserving and prospering families, communities, society, self-government, and the economy.
It is fundamental to the laws of nature and of natures God, and absolutely necessary to the fulfillment of the ultimate stated purpose of the U.S. Constitution, which is to secure the Blessings of Liberty to our Posterity.
It must be fiercely defended on every front from any and all who would pervert it or subvert it, or America cannot possibly survive.
The attack on the natural family represents an existential threat.
Folks who call themselves “conservative” but are wavering on defending marriage need to wake up. Nothing you say you value can survive the demise of the natural family.
It's much more important to be pro-life from conception. I believe in balance in the universe created by some higher being, and our slaughter of the pre-born and our warmongering overseas have created unimaginable death and annihilation, and that from our country. We're being punished; I believe that. That issue is so much romre important than gay marriage....the US respecting life again.
LOL, so you are supporting the gay marriage side.
Elect a president who opposes gay marriage, elect politicians at all levels who oppose gay marriage, from city hall to president, and everything in between.
Quit making arguments to get conservatives to quit opposing gay marriage.
Alright, tell me exactly how you think they can win without the social conservatives - understanding that they are the biggest faction of Conservatism and the biggest portion of the Republican base?
Because I guarantee that it matters to them.
Republicans in Congress have introduced legislation seeking to *****protect***** states from being forced to recognize same-sex marriages.
One thing liberals fear and hate is other people have rights too.

My post stated “this topic (specifically)” in lieu of what is really important to America right now....and I said nothing about eliminating “social conservatives” from the run. Yes, we need them dearly, this coming election is not about gay marriage.
How is the survival of America as a nation of free and moral people instead of as a gulag of moral degenerates, not an important issue?
I DON’T SUPPORT GAY MARRIAGE !!!
And I will declare, in front of God ad everyone, that you are by no means alone.
Then quit posting like you do.
When your arguments are to stop us from opposing it, that is arguing in support of it.
Sodomy matters, a culture and embraces sodomy also embraces failure debauchery and death in the same act.
I will never vote for or support a man who seeks to legitimize sodomite unions as families, Theses are not family nor could they ever be.
They are sterile unnatural unions of sin and death nothing more no matter what the members or others might wish to imagine them otherwise. It is only a delusion that degrades any meaningful relationship equated to it.
That is beside the point - It IS a candidate killer to ALL your social conservative brethren - Do you expect them to discard principle and just roll over?
Excellent reason to abandon voting altogether.
“Yep. Gays are a tiny percent of the population. Monogamous gays are a tiny percent of that subset. Numerically, the subset of that subset is about as numerous as the entire Amish population in the eastern United States.”
There really isn’t a point to monogamy among the homosexual population, there is no possibility of natural children for which to remain united only adopted kids to which at most only one party has any natural bond.
This is the same reason why theses partiest can never be justly regarded as married. A marriage is a natural peroment union around a family which does not and cannot naturally exist, in a one sex relationship just as there is no natural family.
The battle to preserve marriage was a cutural battle for marriage not against sodomites. if that battle is lost then im afraid The legal institution of marriage is gone with it, as is the marriage of anyone culturally associating with that institution.
Simply put if you don’t believe marriage is permanent natural union centered around family, your not now nor have you sense adopting that believe been faithfully capable of marriages. Its like saying you bought something but not believing in trade. Call your thief what you will its not buying.
It is to them.

It would appear that some are twisted over in this element of our society that they cannot step back, and see the big picture of what is at stake in America in this coming 2016 election (and the midterms). This election is not about the gay and perverted element in our society — those forces will be there after this election regardless of its conclusions. They will not go away.
So much more than that, is at stake in America. Too bad some cannot see the big picture regarding our freedom, liberty, world posture, our foreign policy and the responsibility and focus of our government as delineated in the Consitution and our D of I.
That is what this election is about.
This battle is lost because the left simply refused to take NO for an answer. The rest of us, of course, just caved in. Now our judges are openly mocking those who supported traditional marriage as mindless bigots, and we are letting them get away with it. As for me, I am giving up . . . on the country. It’s over. I expect to see it dissolved in my lifetime.
No. Like I said, put your strength into fighting battles you can still win.
The greatest and really only important battle is to start taking back the culture. Conservatives abandoned the battle for the culture at least 4 decades ago. The lost battle against gay marriage and the other problems we presently face are largely a consequence of this dereliction.
As the late, great Breitbart said, “Politics is downstream of culture.” If the culture is lost, the political realm will eventually reflect that, as it should in a democratic society. So if you don’t like political trends, the answer is to fight the culture battle.
And all of that is specifically hinged to our moral decline. It is you that cannot see the big picture.
