What is it like to be president of the United States?
President Bush leaned forward, put his elbows on his knees, and stared at me intently. Are we off the record?
Yes.
And he began to talkand talk and talk for what must have been nearly three hours. Ive never told anyone the specifics of what he said that night, not even my wife or closest friends. I did not make notes later and have only my memory. In the journalism world, off the record is off the record. But I have repeatedly described the hours as amazing, remarkable, stunning.

Obama makes W look like a genius, a patriot, and a defender of the Republic.
Was he ever asked why he left the party with no one other than the loser John McAmnesty to run for president?
I’ve often wondered why the hell he did that to us.
So the Moral is??
Jeb 2016 to repeat all the GOOD times?
It is also clear that Obama does not like people -- he's willing to stoop down to the level of others once in a while, but it's not pleasant for him.
The progressive Bush’s can all rot in hell, imho.

Bush was a decent guy. But he was terribly wrong on a number of issues.
He was a big spender.
He gave up too soon on cutting taxes permanently, instead of allowing the tax cuts to be temporary.
He made some foolish mistakes with appointments, and did nothing to clean out all the clintonoids he inherited in his administration.
He was pro-amnesty.
He was far too friendly with Mexico.
He agreed to “free trade” deals that were not really free trade, but simply amounted to shipping most of our industrial jobs abroad, while doing little or nothing to get similar access to the markets in other countries.
He was, to put it briefly, just too damned nice.
Problem of course, is Obama hasn't heard this every morning - he's apparently too busy with golf and vacation plans and plans to fundamentally transform the world with the magic of his personality.
W reestablished Big Government and boosted the Ruling Class at the expense of everybody not in the Ruling Class. I don’t care what the honorary brother of Bill Clinton told somebody. Actions are louder than words.
Obama avoids intel briefings on purpose. Probably for the reason W pointed out, he does not want to be changed. In fact, all statists avoid truth for that reason.
I miss President Bush
Feel better now that you got that off your chest? I do pity you, though...that much hate toward a decent family is not healthy.
Me, too.
Yeah, he wasn’t and isn’t perfect. He was authentic and he was sincere and he thought about what he was doing. He cared about this country, our traditions and our history. He is a bit younger than me, but I still see my own father in him. A bluntly honest man who spent time learning even while being the most powerful person in the world. A man who could weather the slings and insults and not let them influence his decisions.
Most of all, he is a good human being. I wonder to what degree that is true of all his virulent detractors on all sides?
I know the sorts of comments this post might bring. I really don’t care. W never responded to all the viciousness. It was frustrating, but meant the detractors never even visited his head, let alone lived there, rent-free or not. He had more important things on his mind.
I’m glad he could feel our prayers. Much more important than feeling all the hatred.
Me too.
I loved the article, & I still love Dubya. Didn’t vote for him the first time, but everybody makes mistakes.
However - Bush is far left for my taste, and I hope he really knows the Lord.
That being said, if Bush really cared he might stand up now and become outspoken how we are in grave danger and admit he made some mistakes. Not to mention what Obama is doing is pure evil to destroy the Country.
And not pimp my liberal brother for potus.
He was a decent man who aspired to be a decent man.
Although I disagreed with him on any number of things I never doubted that he was trying to do the right thing and did so out of love for his country and because he wanted to do right.
Sad to say, you can’t say that about every man to have occupied that office.
Thank you, great article. Bush was honorable, honest, and genuinely loves our country and troops. He is the exact opposite of the slimey toad dictator-wannabe we have in the White House now.
Bad people get livid around principled people, can’t explain why
