The intercepts happen pretty regularly since I was in during the mid 80s. Is 10M close? I suppose, but they have to get close enough to read off your tail number and type of aircraft to make sure you are who they think you are.
Near sighted, I guess.
I know of one USAF intercept with a civilian Baron where the jet jock wanted to get real close and scare the pilot. He flew through the Baron, killed the pilot, his 14 year old daughter, and a friend of the daughter.
