US Supreme Court asked to block Wisconsin's Voter ID law
Milwuakee Journal Sentinel ^ | 10-2-14 | Patrick Marley & Jason Stein

Opponents of Wisconsin's photo ID requirement for voters took their case to the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday, seeking an emergency halt to the state's implementation of the law before the fast approaching Nov. 4 election.

~snip~

In their petition, voter ID opponents told the Supreme Court that there's not enough time to properly implement the law in the month remaining in the tight race between GOP Gov. Scott Walker and Democratic challenger Mary Burke.

"Thousands of Wisconsin voters stand to be disenfranchised by this law going into effect so close to the election. Hundreds of absentee ballots have already been cast, and the appeals court's order is fueling voter confusion and election chaos. Eleventh-hour changes in election rules have traditionally been disfavored precisely because the risk of disruption is simply too high," said Dale Ho, director of the Voting Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union, which represents the voters suing the state.

On Sept. 12, the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago ruled that the law could be put in place for the election while a lawsuit over the requirement creeps forward, leaving state officials and local election clerks sprinting to put the law in place. Late Wednesday, the 7th Circuit judges who restored voter ID issued an opinion that noted Wisconsin officials could waive the ID requirement for absentee voting.

Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, who is defending the law in court, said that blocking voter ID anew would sow further confusion and bring about the effect that the law's opponents want to avoid.

"This is surprising and disappointing given the ACLU's previously stated concern over changing the law so close to an election. Apparently, they've abandoned that view and are no longer concerned about voter confusion," Van Hollen said.

Well, we wouldn't be "late" in implementing this law if the ACLU, League of Women Voters, and Vocas Fronteras hadn't kept putting this back in court. This law has been in the works for YEARS!

With the amount of effort they put into fighting any voter integrity laws they must be committing a TON of voter fraud.

Does the stupid party (GOP) have anything planned to combat this next months???

Aren’t states required to make sure the vote is carried out in a process that causes confidence in the sanctity of the vote?

How can you do that if folks can vote over and over and over again, and you can’t even ask them to identify themselves so their names can be checked against the voter rolls?

Everything you do requires an id. Voting should be #1.
Democrats just want to cheat.

And when we go, we should not sit with each other. Control the room by forming a triangle. Don’t let them see you hanging out with friends. If questions come from disparate parts of the room, they’ll get confused.

We had better regain the Senate if we stand any chance of stopping this mad SC.

Thousands of Wisconsin voters stand to be disenfranchised by this law going into effect so close to the election.

So if the election were delayed 90 days, would you then be in favor of the law?

I certainly hope you are right. Unless Kagan issues an emergency ruling from a short bench — committee.

Based on the eligibility question and the courts avoidance, I must ask who has standing in this case? Who cannot vote that is eligible to vote? If you can a case to the USSC you can get a government ID.

They claimed in another article that up to 300,000 “Voters” did not have identification. How would they know that if they didn’t have ID in the first place?? If I were a Judge I would have made them PROVE this Claim or get locked up for contempt.

Bring me 1000 of your “No Id” voters and I will show 1000 people that DO NOT HAVE A LEGAL RIGHT TO VOTE. You cant take a leak in this country without ID anymore.

I hope the SCOTUS upholds the law thereby setting a precedent for overturning other Federal Judges striking Voter ID laws.

Didn't the SCOTUS already uphold State's rights to Voter ID laws in April 2008?

2008-Crawford v. Marion County Election Board
-
In a 6-3 decision in 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality
of the 2005 Indiana photo ID requirement,
finding it closely related to Indiana’s legitimate state interest
in preventing voter fraud, modernizing elections, and safeguarding voter confidence.

Just what is this business of citing judicial precedent? Don’t you know that sort of legal maneuvering is just the kind of thing that will throw the Democrat “get out the vote” effort off balance and may even result in a REPUBLICAN having a chance of winning?

(Do I HAVE to include the < sarcasm > tag?)

I’ve always been in favor of the law, no matter when the election is held. As an election worker for many years, I can testify that we have people who slap down their ID at every election, even though it is not the law. They WANT to show it.
