DALLAS — The first Ebola patient diagnosed in the United States has local ties to the Charlotte region.

Thomas Eric Duncan went to a Dallas emergency room late Thursday night and explained that he was visiting the U.S. from Liberia. He was sent home with antibiotics, according to his sister, Mai Wureh.

He returned two days later, after his condition worsened, and was admitted to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital.

Duncan has family that lives in Kannapolis and they told NBC News they alerted the CDC of Duncan's condition. There is no threat locally, according to officials.

"I called CDC to get some actions taken, because I was concerned for his life and he wasn't getting the appropriate care," Duncan's nephew, Josephus Weeks, told NBC News on Wednesday night. "I feared other people might also get infected if he wasn't taken care of, and so I called them to ask them why is it a patient that might be suspected of this disease was not getting appropriate care?"

Weeks also told NBC News the CDC referred him to the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, which spoke to him and then took appropriate action.

“The country was founded by freed American slaves, the Capital is named after US President James Monroe and there have been close ties between our two countries for the last 150 years or so. There are hundreds of thousands of dual Liberian-American citizens in both countries.”

Of course.

But how many more hundreds of thousands of Liberians (or Ghanians, Somalis, Guatamalans, or pick any other country of origin) do we need to import?

“This just in from the NYT. The man KNEW he had Ebola and bought a plane ticket to get to the USA in time to be treated in a US hospital courtesy of the US taxpayers.”

Thanks - there was speculation on that. It sounds like his entire family is on the U.S. dole - something like 14 people living in a low-income housing apartment.

What is the saying - “two times smart, twice dumb?” Self-preservation can be a strong motivator - more than being concerned about what it might do to others. Coming to a neighborhood near you.

And just wait until they put your neighborhood in quarantine. Can’t go to work to earn money, no trips to the store, etc. Some neighborhoods might be really good to be in, with everyone taking care and watching out for each other. A LOT of places it will be every man for themselves.

For what it’s worth, I heard that up to 100 people may have had contact with the idiot.

So the idiot has family in NC? Hopefully, none of them were actually down there after he came back to the US.
