Huh? Overflowing gas would likeliest be from the $50 nozzle on the dispenser. Having gas overflow out of the tank is a not-uncommon occurrence, and should be taken into account in the design and design review process.
For such a common occurrence to result in such a catastrophic and massively injury-and-death possible event as a CAR FIRE - by such a clear path of cause - is engineering incompetence.

Was looking for a shot of how close the gas cap is to the somewhat exposed rear engine and this is the best I could come up with. I think one side is for gas and the other is for electric recharging but if you look at the left edge of this photo you can see the gas cap and how close it is to those hot exhausts.

The incompetence here is by the person doing the refueling, not engineers.
I have refueled jets and small aircraft with hot engines below the wing without burning any of them to the ground.
Don’t blame the designers of the gun for the misuse by the person with their finger on the trigger.
