The U.S. Department of Justice asked Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson on Friday to prohibit police officers from wearing I am Darren Wilson bracelets while on duty in Ferguson.
Christy Lopez, a deputy chief in the Civil Rights Division, told Jackson in a letter that residents had photos of officers, from unknown local agencies, wearing the bracelets.
We are keenly aware of the importance of individual expression of opinions, even those that some find offensive, insensitive, or harmful, Lopez said in the letter. However, she continued, these bracelets reinforce the very us versus them mentality that many residents of Ferguson believe exists.
This is at least the second letter from Lopez to Jackson this week. The first, dated Tuesday, urged Jackson to enforce department policies requiring officers to wear nametags.

I don’t like the DOJ memo and the Federalism issues it raises...
BUT...
uniforms are issued for a reason.
Very well. Wear, “I am not Michael Brown” bracelets.
The federal government has no place dictating the dress codes of local police. If the local police dress code allows cancer awareness bracelets, POW/MIA bracelets, or bracelets supporting fellow law enforcement officers, that’s none of the DOJ’s business.
Not on duty.
As much as I agree with the sentiment of the Officers, yes, it would be inflamatory to wear this declaration in that city at this time. It would be an unnecessary provocation. In their private lives, and on facebook, the cops should be able to do as they wish w/o risking their jobs.
You both are so far off base that you're in a different universe.
When the DOJ begins a vigorous prosecution of the New Black Panthers for their egregious "Wanted Dead or Alive" incendiary poster during the Hood Neighborhood riots , I will entertain any absurd "should or shouldn't" opinions by the clueless.
But don't hold your breath!
Have you actually read the Ferguson Police Department dress code?
If they are not prohibited from wearing bracelets, then this is a violation of free speech. They are expressing solidarity with a guy they know to be a good cop who is being targeted for a lynching.
They had an "I am Spartacus" moment.
If you're really interested don't give up.
I found this with my first Google search.
“If they are not prohibited from wearing bracelets, then this is a violation of free speech.”
I lost faith in the free speech argument years ago when burning of our flag was declared free speech. “Free speech” has been as overused at “racist”.
If the boss says not to wear the bracelet,I don’t wear the bracelet or I seek other employment.
.
Local community police departments are NOT military units.
That's the way it is.
It is plainly a political statement in support of a wrongly accused fellow officer who is in hiding due to numerous death threats.
That's the way it is.
Local police dress codes are determined by the local community. Not by the criminal DOJ; and certainly not by you.
That's the way it is.
Let’s wear T-Shirts that say: I can shoot your eye out at 500 meters.
The boss has made no such order. The criminal DOJ has no such authority, doofus!
Think about it.
Past criminal abuse and impropriety does not legitimize the attempt.
I was thinking of
You be gansta?
I'll be Elliot Ness.
What business of theirs is this?
I’d concur. If they want a keepsake in their pocket that’s different. But this is just to join the idiotic game of who can egg whom on.
And if your boss tells you to pray to Allah five times during your shift?
Anyone know where I can by a few of these??
