GOP Congressman Warns Of The Real Social Ill Destroying American Values: Marijuana
Huffington Post ^ | Sep 26th, 2014 | Elise Foley

WASHINGTON -- Conservatives are losing ground on the fight to keep marijuana illegal, a Republican congressman warned in dire terms at the Values Voter Summit.

During a conference mostly focused on religious liberty, abolishing the IRS and promoting small government, Rep. John Fleming (R-La.) delivered a full speech on the ills of decriminalizing and legalizing marijuana.

Fleming, a medical doctor, warned of a "growing acceptance" of marijuana -- a fact hard to deny, considering public opinion and state laws. Colorado and Washington state have legalized recreational marijuana, and 23 states and the District of Columbia have allowed the substance for medical use.

“Every New Testament translator has denied your asserted meaning by rendering pharmakeia as “sorcery” and not “drug use.””

The obtuseness of this comment is quite amazing.

What's amazing is your continuing refusal to post an actual argument.

You say that as if there is an argument concerning something so prima facie.

I don’t come to Free Republic to argue against 60’s counter culture and New Left propaganda spouted by blowhard stoners.

It appears that the most effective way to reduce access to marijuana by young people is harnessing the power of the market by legalizing for adults

Repeating your speculation over and over won't make it true. The problem with MJ is kids don't take it seriously (as a drug) because many dumb adults do not, starting with the MJ legalizers and working down to the recreational smokers in states where it is illegal. Here in Virginia many irresponsible adults flaunt the law. A number of kids buy fairly potent seeds online and grow it themselves. I don't know the percentage but it is enough to supply some of the rest of the kids.

When they smoke kids become much less motivated to do anything, but also can be a lot more volatile. While it appears that stoners laugh easily at a lot of non-funny things, they also can be prone to quick irrational anger. Suffice to say I would much rather deal with a couple of drunk kids than stoners. Drunks, even angry ones, are more predictable and less of a threat.

Illegal immigration and the welfare state are a disaster
Legal marijuana and the welfare state will be a disaster

If they have any smarts the Communist Chinese are funding these state marijuana legalization campaigns. They certainly are in favor of a more stoned American population starting young as possible

You're right, there isn't - every New Testament translator agrees that Gal. 5:19-21 is about sorcery and not drug use.

[underlined was omitted by palmer:] Young people report that they can get pot (which is illegal for all, except in a few states) more easily than beer or cigarettes (which are legal for adults). It appears that the most effective way to reduce access to marijuana by young people is harnessing the power of the market by legalizing for adults

Nothing you posted contradicts the fact I posted and you omitted from your reply.

"They certainly are in favor of a more stoned American population starting young as possible"

Are you aware of some specific policy or effort on the part of the Chinese?

Perhaps some proclamation of support? Even underground publications?

"yet, you want more of it"

I guess I ought to learn to use the sarcasm tag.

No, I don't want more of government.

I want to burn it all down and start over.

“Alcohol is not as mentally/spiritually harmful as marijuana.”

What recovered alcoholics say is that their alcoholism was a physical, mental and spiritual illness.

All 12 step programs use the same principles and same 12 steps.

The final step includes a “spiritual awakening.”

As used in the program, “spiritual” is more along the lines of deciding driving drunk, is not moral, and less about memorizing Biblical passages.

Most people that I have met during my sobriety (over 20 years), would say that addiction, be it alcohol or marijuana, is the problem, not the specific substance.

About 10 percent of our society becomes “problem drinkers.”

That 10 percent consume almost 75% of the booze sold.

Are you for real!! The Chinese are our major economic competitors. They would love to see a more stoned America. How many Chinese you think smoke your effin marijuana? The Chinese will be educating their children for new technologies while ours our getting stoned like Obama did as a teen.

And once they mess up their brains they will never go into any kind of science or tech field. Their brains can't handle it.

I agree on that. Plus marijuana is a 3rd world intoxicant. Alcohol is the traditional European intoxicant. I am European so why would I smoke dope? 3rd worlders grow opium, chew on cocoa leaves, smoke marijuana.

It's apparent you have little exposure to either.

Having been in the tech business since the 80s I am comfortable saying that the majority of engineers smoke weed.

It's rare that any tech company tests for it anymore.

It's embedded in the culture.

The only thing predictable about pot smokers is they giggle a lot and then fall asleep. Irrational anger yea right, that is people intoxicated on alcohol. So you are for prohibiting alcohol again right?
