Eric Holder’s Legacy
NY Times ^ | SEPT. 25, 2014 | THE EDITORIAL BOARD

Posted on 09/25/2014 7:20:26 PM PDT by Second Amendment First

By any measure, the nearly-six-year tenure of Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. has been one of the most consequential in United States history. His decision to resign, which he announced on Thursday, was long anticipated but still a surprise. He has said he will stay on through his successor’s confirmation, although it is hard to imagine that anyone who could make it through the current Senate will have a comparable impact.

As the first African-American to serve as the nation’s top law enforcement official, Mr. Holder broke ground the moment he took office. In a position that rarely rewards boldness — and in the face of a frequently hostile Congress — Mr. Holder has continued to stake out strong and laudable legal positions on many of the most contested issues of our time. But his record is marred by the role the Justice Department played in matters of secrecy and national security under his leadership.

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE In 2011, Mr. Holder announced that the Justice Department would no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage under federal law as between a man and a woman. The law was unconstitutional, he said. It was a critical moment that foreshadowed both President Obama’s own “evolution” on same-sex marriage the following year and the Supreme Court’s 2013 ruling invalidating an important part of the law. Since the court’s decision, nearly two dozen federal courts have struck down state bans on same-sex marriage throughout the country, and the Supreme Court has been asked again to rule on whether there is a constitutional right to same-sex marriage — a question it dodged in 2013.

His “legacy” will be that it is now okay for racist, bigots with a hatred for whitey to be the nation’s “top cop”.

Please name the standards you are judging this racist by.

I think he showed early on that he would use the "black panther" standard.

so what if a future AG decided they didn't want to defend the civil rights act as they no longer viewed it necessary??

you can't just pick and choose the laws you like.

One of the first things he did as ag was to cancel the investigation of Bamako supporter mayor Kevin Johnson of Sacramento and fore the investigator.

We don't need no stinkin' Supreme Court when Holder can make all the calls by himself...

Eric Holder leaves an extraordinary legacy. It will not be soon forgotten how the AG of the U.S. led a racist lynch mob, obstructed justice to cover up for the President and declared U.S. citizens “a Nation of Cowards.”

Future generations will marvel at how a nation voted against their own interest and will look back at this time as the political Dark Ages.

His ONLY legacy is that he set back civil rights in the US by fifty years.

End of story.
