It is appropriate for a salute to be rendered with the left hand if the right hand is occupied or unusable. Obama had the opportunity for a left handed salute, but it appears that he was too lazy or just ignorant of the rule.

Make no mistake, this is NOT my guy. But the truth is that you do not salute when when you are not in uniform. Yeah, I know there is no uniform for this guy as CinC, and if there were, IMO, he doesn’t deserve to wear it. When I went through boot, we were taught, you do not salute when not in uniform and you do not salute when you are uncovered as indoors. Even your CO gets one salute upon first greeting of the day, and then it is no longer necessary. I speak for the Navy and the Marine Corps. I am not sure what the other services do. Yes, I know, George Bush returned a salute when leaving Marine 1. But he was not in uniform and should have acknowledged the salute in some other way.
Too bad he didn’t trip down the helicopter stairs while giving this insulting salute and land face down on the tarmac. Maybe the ghost of Jerry Ford will make that happen someday.
It’s not like he doesn’t know that he is going to receive a salute. He’s just not smart enough to remember that he has two hands.

The only ones upset are the ones that expect him to change. I don’t expect him to ever do anything right so nothing he does ‘shocks’ me.
He probably laughs at the ‘outrage’ over his actions, he doesn’t care what we think of him, so why should we care when he does little things like this?
People on tv will make a big deal out of this and the ILLEGAL ALIEN children are still coming over the border and being deposited all over the country.
Especially if you are the Commander In Chief.

Well, if you are speaking as an active duty person or as a veteran, then all I can say is...Too many years have gone by, because that’s the way it was way back when. Again, I speak as a Navy veteran.

Greta is discussing the “latte salute” at this very moment. Her talking heads are dismissing the affront as a minor thing, way down the list of his major flaws. To me, it’s a very big deal, an inexcusable sign of deep-seated disrespect for the military he commands.
