At an event today at the University of Texas Austin campus, Texas Governor Rick Perry reaffirmed his support of allowing illegal immigrant students to pay in-state tuition at Texas colleges and universities, while U.S. citizens from other states continue to pay higher out-of-state tuition rates. Perry made his remarks in a "One-on-One Conversation" with Texas Tribune CEO and Editor-in-Chief Evan Smith at the Texas Tribune Festival, an annual event organized by the online media outlet. Breitbart Texas made several queries to Governor Perry's press office for comment, but as of press time, had not received a reply. A UT student asked Perry a question inspired by a Tribune Festival panel from the previous day titled "What to do with DREAMers," referring to the children who were brought here by their parents without legal immigration status and want to attend public state universities. The student mentioned that Perry had signed a law granting in-state tuition to illegal immigrants and asked if he was still in support of that law, and also asked why Republicans had moved away from supporting this issue.
The law in question, HB 1403, was signed into law by Perry on June 16, 2001 and allows undocumented immigrant students who have lived in Texas at least three years and have a Texas high school diploma or GED equivalent to qualify for in-state tuition if they sign an affidavit that they intend to apply for permanent residency status as soon as they can.
HB 1403 passed by a substantial majority vote in both chambers of the Texas legislature with only four dissenting votes, but has been criticized since then as being one of the "magnets" that encourages people to enter the United States illegally. Perry defended the law six years later in an interview

I really think we would have to change the composition of the governorships, the House and the Senate (on both a state and federal level) to get that accomplished.
I would be surprised to see that happen. The last politician I have seen in recent times that was strong on illegal immigration was Duncan Hunter...and we all know how his campaign worked out.
Truthfully, I don’t want any of the previous people that had their hats in the ring to run again.
Now he's wearing those hipster glasses, trying to look smart and make everyone forget what a moron he came off as during his presidential campaign in 2011-2012.
Illegals are just as much out of state as someone form Kansas.
“We always give money to Foreigners, Allies.”
Now we do because we have a corrupt government. But, we didn’t previous. The constitution does not allow using the people’s money for foreign welfare or any welfare.
I am living in the real world, you are not. Build the fence, stop them coming in, by whatever means we can. But there are millions and millions of Mexican families living in the US, they are not going to be kicked out. No matter how badly we want that to happen, it is not going to happen. It doesn’t make me a liberal for facing that reality.
Ditter, I see where you are coming from and I agree.
To me it is a matter of dealing with what is reality and wishing for something that ain’t gonna happen. There isn’t going to be a mass round up and deportation of illegals ala Eisenhower. It won’t happen. the Feds and the general public won’t allow it. Sometimes you have to play the cards you have been dealt and try to limit any further damage.
jmho
According to the author of post# 59 ILLEGAL aliens are Texans.
Exactly
Dang it! you beat me by 1 minute. I’m gonna have to pick up my typing speed.
But the man you support and defend does not want to build a fence.
And you say it is I who is not in the real world? lol!
btw...I never said you were a liberal. I said you were advocating liberal positions because you are. California's governor Jerry Brown agrees with both you and Perry. I, being in the real world, disagree.
Looks like he’s learned nothing from the recent border issues. It’s a shame.
No. Illegals should not be applying for citizenship. They need to come in the front door to do that. Illegals are not US Citizens and should not be attending high school. All that is for legal immigrants. What you are talking about is what our government is allowing to happen.
FEDERAL LAW requires that all children, regardless of their status, are provided with an education through Grade 12.
I’ll say it this way, they have been coming in this way for 150 years and nothing as been done to stop them coming in or to send them back, and now your are screaming that it is Perry’s fault. Let’s blame Reagan, didn’t he give them amnesty? Let’s blame LBJ Jimmah Carter.
I hope Ted Cruz is our next president and he does something about it but I am not going to hold my breath.
Boooooo! We should NOT have to educate any illegal except to the laws of deportation. When illegals are taking college desks away from Texas citizens, something is wrong.
They have to pay buffyt. They do not get the tuition given to them. And 99% of them go to a junior college.
I still find it hard to believe how many are STILL fooled by LaRaza Rickeeee! There is no way this guy is a Conservative. Not even close. Heck, there are still FReepers who are fooled by him and that is double hard to believe!
We Texans have been trying to tell FR for years about this a-hat but everyone outside of the Lone Star State looooooves Gov. Goodhair. He's long worn out his welcome in Texas and knows he will not get reelected so is trying desperately to get a new audience.
Please point to any post of mine in this thread wherein I have said that is Perry's fault. I'll save you some time, you can't because I have not. My complaint with Perry is his pro-ILLEGAL position of rewarding ILLEGAL behavior. You can't deny that because it is an undeniable fact. Instate tuition and financial aid are rewards based on their ILLEGAL status. That is why lawful American citizens do not apply.
And I agree with you 100% about Cruz. I assume you know, however, that if Rick Perry had his way Ted Cruz would never have made it to Washington. Yet another reason to NOT support Rick Perry.
Perry is a loser. You may like him, many do. But he is far too soft on ILLEGAL immigration to be POTUS. And the issue needn't be so black and white. Not rewarding the ILLEGAL behavior does not automatically mean rounding them up and shipping them home. But should we deport all who are captured, stop rewarding their ILLEGAL behavior, stop hiring them, enforce the laws and punish all employers who do they would have less reason to come here and stay. Does that mean they would go home? They're coming here for the jobs, so what do you think?
FEDERAL LAW requires that abortion be available to American women. Does that make it right?
