He will likely need a root canal before it’s over with if the tooth is broken that extensively.

The dentist apparently does not think so. But dentists are not always very smart, as I have discovered..
Probably thinks that cleaning it up and repacking, and recapping is all that he needs to do...but then it could be a old root canal. 30 years ago, they were not that good, insofar as killing the nerve. Molars are also dual rooted....depends....the dentist may be right..
