Got a question for you..on dentures..
I have a horrible gag reflex...I’m 65 and have been avoiding dentures for over a decade now..
Did you have any problems with getting used to having a foreign object in your mouth?
Actually, not much. Now, let me preface that by saying that I’d worn an upper partial for several years before I had to go the full monte. The biggest thing I noticed was getting used to the upper covering my entire soft palate. I had a pretty strong gag reflex, too, but I was surprised how well the dentures fit (and they do preform test fittings before making the final product). Once your brain and your mouth rewire themselves to accommodate the prosthetic appliance, you’ll notice that gag reflex pretty much disappears entirely. Especially then your gums begin to compress. I found that it was the lower that actually took a little more getting used to than the upper, myself, but nothing medieval about it. It’s worth the investment. And one other thing I’ve discovered - some things like steak and (YES!) corn-on-the-cob I can actually chew better with my teeth out. Things like apples and nuts, I leave them in. It’s a matter of what you get comfortable with. I walk around the house without them in and my wife doesn’t bat an eyelash.
