The substantial gap between how much Democrats have on hand to spend for television campaign ads versus how much cash is in Republican coffers is why a GOP Senate majority remains in doubt, writes veteran Republican strategist Karl Rove in The Wall Street Journal.
Democrats have been raising more money than Republicans and have $25 million on hand compared to $20 million for Republicans. They have committed or spent $109 million in political commercials versus $80 million for the Republicans since the beginning of September. The president continues to bring in big bucks for the Democrats, Rove writes.
Rove, who raises money for Republican candidates through his American Crossroads/Crossroads GPS, writes that while GOP totals could yet rise and the Democratic advantage could well be narrowed, Republicans need to close the gap.
For now, he writes, Democrats are spending more in such key senatorial races as Alaska ($6.4 million to $3.6 million), Arkansas ($6.2 million to $4.6 million), Colorado ($8.5 million to $7 million), Iowa, ($8.5 million to $5.6 million), Louisiana ($5.7 million to $5.6 million) and North Carolina ($17.6 million to $7.8 million).
"Republicans do not need to outspend Democrats to prevail," but they do need to "reach a certain sufficiency of advertising in the next six weeks," he writes.
To win, Republican candidates have to effectively defend themselves. For instance, they have to be able to address Democratic charges that the GOP has conducted a "war on women."

2. Because none of us are giving them a dime, and are enjoying hanging up on them when they call.My phone has been ringing off the hook from NRSC (caller ID).
I've already told them to stop calling me, that if they need money they should be talking to their illegal friends.
The GOP-e, observing the success of the DemocRAT Party, similarly thought they could urinate on a key component of the base (i.e., conservatives) and still command their loyalty—SURPRISE!!
Call on Rove to give back, pay it forward! Work for free or bankroll the GOP. He has them bamboozled.

I would say they need to get off defense and go on offense. They have plenty to work with.
But that’s just me.
But the GOPe operatives will soon be all over this thread telling us conservatives what jerks and fools and knuckleheads we are for not seeing their big picture. After all, we MUST pony up cash to Rove because the most liberal RINO voting for liberal items are far better than dems voting for liberal items.
That is one of the things I mentioned when telling them I would not give them a dime: I said it was a disgrace.
Not this one. I am fed up with them.
That’s why Obama is out at a fund-raiser every day that he’s not playing golf. He realizes that’s their only hope in November of keeping the Senate.
I tell them three permanent lines in the sand:
1. Swear the repeal O’Care.
2. Swear to close border and enforce our current laws.
3. Swear the reel in the EPA.
So far, they have quit calling me.
Ditto to your post.
RNC/GOP is told to pound sand....and plenty of reasons why...with EVERY solicitation they send me. They’ve now gotten the hint and send a postage required envelope, rather than the prepaid.
Putzes. They couldn’t lead their way out of a wet paper bag.
Tell Rove to get money from his multinational corporation Chamber of Commerce buddies, since the Republican leadership act like they are their only constituents.
Heck, they are always willing to shell out millions to screw conservatives, slowly erode America, while filling their own pockets with taxpayer dollars. So they might as well at least pay themselves for the liberal-Whig politicians they buy.
They could turn this around. Get those corrupt Mississippi judges to award the nomination to McDaniel, and get MitchMcDonnell and all the other backstabbers out there to praise the decision.
Every dollar I spend for a Senator I give through the Senate Conservatives Fund.
That way I know my money is going to a good cause.
FU KR.
“Even now, before the election even occurs, you have people like Boehner talking about passing amnesty in the lame duck. If they are openly talking about that now, before the vote, what makes anyone think they will be MORE conservative once they dont have to face the voters for another 2 years.”
Because they would have the senate to cover for them. They could go hardcore either way and know without 67 votes the bill goes nowhere.
It’s all theatre. My concern is committee assignments in the senate and the inability to replace Ginsburg with someone to Chomsky’s left.
I’m part of the Conservative base they crapped on and cast aside. I give only to individual campaigns now, nothing to the NRC, NRSC, NRCC. Since I live in Mississippi I now give nothing to the Mississippi GOP, I’ll reconsider if they dump joe nosef and henry barbour.
“To win, Republican candidates have to effectively defend themselves. For instance, they have to be able to address Democratic charges that the GOP has conducted a ‘war on women’.”
Hey, Rove—Ye of Many Chins—about also counseling your clients that in addition to defending themselves of charges of conducing a war on women, they also come up with a brief rationale of why anyone would want to vote FOR them.
You mean our very own Theron of the 300 fame. Willing to sell their souls and their children all for the Party.
They talk about the “big picture” but in reality they are all about winning the next election and retaining power. The Republican Party has shown it is not interested in any change unless it means more $$$ and power for them. In the “big picture” they are just riding the tiger hoping to be the last one eaten instead of jumping off and killing the damned thing.
My husband always answers the phone when they call, and he tells them the same thing. And they have the nerve to argue with him! My husband is not one to hang up, and he loves to keep them on the line making them angry.
