From the article I thought it said he crossed the country killing people to get even for the U. S. and it’s activities in the Middle-East. Did I misconstrue what was said?

I believe he tried to give a political/religious purpose to the killings after the fact; he had non-Muslim accomplices, and could have killed dozens of black Americans in an urban area without raising any flags.
