If one of the F-18’s had a major failure and loses flight control at even average speed it could strike the other plane in seconds if they were in close proximity to each other.
Ship’s captain is in charge of the ship. CAG is in charge of the Air Group (squadrons).
What are the chances of losing TWO planes by accidents?!?! That’s just unbelievable!
Did the fighters actually crash or is this cover for the Chinese shooting them down?
Prayers for our brave pilots.
“Formation flying is somewhat dangerous at times. Yes to a degree that they were responsible they get a reprimand.Draconian? What would you do to an employee who destroyed a 35 million dollar factory through his negligence? Promote him? Give him a week off? Don’t think so.”
Depends if your daddy or other relatives were Admirals.
If so, you would get promoted and might become a US $inator.

How many planes did John McCain crash in navy?
From Factcheck.org We have had numerous questions about this widely circulated claim. Some say McCain “lost” five planes, others that he “crashed” five planes. All offer this alleged “fact” as evidence that he was a bad pilot. All are incorrect. McCain did lose two Navy aircraft while piloting them, both due to engine failure. A third was destroyed on the deck of the carrier USS Forrestal when a missile fired accidentally from another plane hit either the plane next to McCain’s or, less likely, his own aircraft, triggering a disastrous fire that killed 134 sailors and nearly killed McCain. A fourth plane was lost when he was shot down over North Vietnam on a bombing mission over Hanoi. There’s no evidence that any of the four destroyed planes were lost to pilot error. A fifth alleged “crash” turns out to be a misinterpretation of a flight accident that did not result in the loss of the aircraft. McCain admitted to causing that incident through “daredevil clowning” but returned safely.”
I doubt we get the truth about most of these things.
Maverick underestimated his approach speed and clipped the tail of Goose’s plane. I saw the movie/S

So you were the guy that couldn’t figure out what direction the wind was coming from.
Alameda, CA
Nah - I was the guy who told the Airboss to pound sand when he wanted me to turn into a reef or into the path of an oncoming ship that was restricted in maneuvering. Hell one time they asked me to adjust for HELOS during an underway replenishment!
I feared the LDO CHENG more than the Airboss.

Was posted here yesterday evening Pacific time.
suspected, since time date was about 5:35 pm as occurrence.
Wow. What a man.
Separate crashes...or a collision>
Not really. She may have been 60's era, but she was an Oberon class (HMAS Onslow to be precise) - among the quietest submarines ever built - carrying out the precise mission she was designed for.
It worked okay for John McCain...
Dang, I should’ve read further down where Grampa Dave did the job.
IIRC, IAF pilots retire with more hours and more combat hours than USA pilots.
