The decision by the U.S. Department of Justice to launch a civil rights investigation into the police practices that led to the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. has been welcomed by the nations association of teachers.
National Education Association (NEA) President Lily Eskelsen García issued the following statement:
Educators applaud Attorney General Eric Holder for launching a civil rights investigation into the police practices of the Ferguson police department. This is a step in the right direction and much-needed action that family members of Michael Brown, community, and civil rights leaders have been demanding since the incident.
Like the death of Trayvon Martin, the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson has inspired millions of Americans across the country to urgently seek answers and demand action. We agree. We need to end widespread racial profiling and racially motivated violence against and humiliation of racial and ethnic minorities.
Educators believe that now is the time to raise awareness and create dialogue about the problem of racial and ethnic profiling nationwide.
We also believe that this dialogue must happen in our schools and communities, amongst parents, educators, and with our youth.
NEA has put together tools and resources for educators, parents, social justice advocates, and community partners to help start the dialogue to end racial profiling.
To help create this dialogue, NEA has joined a curriculum workgroup with the NAACP, Not In Our Town/Not in Our School, and Teaching Tolerance/Southern Poverty Law Center.
Also, The Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, American Federation of Teachers (AFT), Human Rights Educators of the USA (HRE-USA) Network, and Facing History and Ourselves.
The workgroup has identified and/or developed materials to help educators, parents, administrators, and youth address the problem of racial profiling. These materials include tips for youth on how to interact during encounters with law enforcement.
NEA recognizes that racial profiling is not just a police problem, and we are working to eradicate racial disparities in school discipline. Too many students of color are being suspended from school. Alongside a growing chorus of voices nationwide parents, students, district officials, community organizations, and policymakers NEA has called on its 3 million members to embrace proven restorative approaches to addressing conflict in schools.
NEA also provided its members with evidence-based strategies for creating a school climate in which all students are treated equally and discipline problems are greatly reduced.
NEA recognizes that the issue of racial profiling will not be resolved in a day, a week, or a month. Racism is, after all, the most intractable force in our society and denial is the life-support system of racism. But we believe if people of good will confront the evils of racial profiling and racism, we will overcome them.

"Racial profiling and racially motivated violence and humiliation" of Whitey will still be okay though, right? I mean, sucker punching old white people won't be banned will it?
What did Mr. Brown’s death have to do with any school facility? It would be a good first step to instruct the little oatmeal-heads how to behave in a civil manner in the presence of a male authority figure, especially a police officer, but why is a teachers’ union hollering about this? And WHY are they called “educators”, instead of “TEACHERS” ? Educator is OK for university, law or medical schools, but IMO it sounds ridiculously pompous for K-12 level....
Let's just be glad that these "educators" weren't tasked with investigating the Challenger explosion and disaster.
Incidentally, the job they did educating the dead thug (2 years behind his age level) speaks volumes about the NEA's "professionalism."
They want to off you, that's what they would like.
Preach it Mrzzz. Winfrey...
"for racism to end, racists must die.
She ain't talking about no bruthas either.
No sir.
There are still generations of people, older people, who were born and bred and marinated in it in that prejudice and racism and they just have to die.

There you have it.
There will never be enough appeasement.
Welfare, food stamps, AFDC, Section 8, SNAP, Affirmative Action hiring preferences, Affirmative Action college degrees, Black this, Black that, on and on, etc, etc.
Never.
Enough.

Before this is over, the Ferguson police department will be dissolved, the city council will be recalled, and there is the very real possibility that the city of Ferguson will disincorporate.
The city council is falling all over themselves to give into the terroristic threats and demands of all the special interest groups who have come out of the woodwork and now smell blood. They have introduced bills that would in essence make coming to court optional and fines based on your ability to pay. They have introduced a bill that would cut their revenue generated in fines by half. This will severly hamper their ability to pay for an already overworked police department or provide much needed infrastructure.
What’s worse is they apparently did not consult with the municipal league about the ripple effect of such actions which will undoubtedly cause the the activists to demand the same from all the other governments.
There is now intel that there were DOJ plants in the protest on Hanley Road two days ago to monitor how the police arrest the protestors. Agencies are getting a spate of complaints now, some on incidents that happened months ago, by those who are now demanding FOIA on officer’s personnel files.
This is going to get worse, much worse. Whether or not it stays confined to the St. Louis Metro area is unknown but worth considering.
“Before this is over, the Ferguson police department will be dissolved, the city council will be recalled, and there is the very real possibility that the city of Ferguson will disincorporate.”......
Another Detroit in the making. The problem is, where will the street rats migrate to when there is no more Ferguson? Perhaps they will become YOUR neighbor.
I don’t worry about them becoming my neighbors (I have some degree of separation from the hotzone) but in five to ten years, there will be no whites in North St. Louis County anymore, which at one time boasted some of the more tony neighborhoods in the St. Louis area.
What is strange is that young whites are moving BACK into St. Louis City proper, revitalizing neighborhoods that were destroyed by the perpetually aggrieved populace and are getting accused of gentrification.
Young whites will re-settle old European settlements when the unassimilated trash is removed; police departments are under orders to protect them as the new cash cow for taxation to feed said trash.
Funny that the NEA should weigh in on this; they have probably done more damage to blacks (with their absurd contracts that pay them NOT to educate them) than anyone else.
“NEA has joined a curriculum workgroup with the NAACP,”
They have totally delegitimized themselves by joining
with an organization more racist than the Klan.
“Incidentally, the job they did educating the dead thug (2 years behind his age level) speaks volumes about the NEA’s “professionalism.”
Good point.
The purpose of the National Educators Association is not to promote education but to promote educators.
The neo-fascist racists are publicly embracing each other. Time for the states to start arresting these lawless goons under their anti-klan laws.
Fixed it.
