DENVER (CBS4) For the first time in CBS4 history an incumbent U.S. senator has declined to debate his opponent live on air. In fact, Sen. Mark Udall isnt doing a debate on any of the four major network television stations in Denver.
CBS4 Political Specialist Shaun Boyd said its disappointing to CBS4, but its also unfortunate for CBS4 viewers.
Live debates are the one opportunity voters have to see candidates go toe-to-toe without a media filter, see the clarity of their vision and courage of their conviction; how they think on their feet and respond under pressure, Boyd said. Weve been trying to schedule this debate for more than two months.
The debate was to last an hour and be aired live during prime time from CBS4 studios.
Unlike attack ads that cost millions of dollars to air, it was free air time. But incumbent Sen. Mark Udall said, No thanks, Boyd said. CBS4 has a long history of hosting political debates dating back to its days as KOA. For more than 30 years the station has invited candidates for U.S. Senate to debate on CBS4s air, and never has a candidate passed on the opportunity until now.
Udall says hes all booked.

Empty chair.
Can’t lie fast enough on live TV so he had to pass.
Udall is trying to run away from his close ties with Obama and the people of Colo. are seeing it.
Democrats can never show their true colors because they would be rejected every time.
Got the commie on the run!
They don’t need this yellow belly ‘RAT coward. Let his opponent go on by himself and answer questions for an hour if yellow boy can’t handle the pressure.
“Udall says he’s all booked.”
‘Would love to, but no can do! I got a goose and duck soiree all that week,’ said the bashful politico.
No further comment.
The only issue he’s running on is the unfettered ability to kill your unborn children at any time. His commercials are disgusting and full of lies. Gardner’s commercials show Udall for the Commie Obama lick-spittle he truly is. Udall needs to abort himself.
What’s the matter Udall...are you chicken???
Udall is a piece of crap coward..
Then give all the tv debate time to Cory Gardner.
Obviously. Completely.
Udall hasn’t done anything in 5 years but to vote with Piglosi and his Mormon brother Reid the Red. Does Udall wear his Mormon panties like they accused Romney? The other Mormon pantie wearer is Udall in NM. Hope they both lose. What is it with these Mormon traitors Reid and the Udall’s? Oh, by the way, the Mormons think they are the chosen ones. Why do Mormons and Muslems religion begin with “m”?
The man is an embarrassment to Colorado. Kick him out!
That’ll never happen. Colorado’s enemedia has been carrying Udall’s water for years. I predict he’ll change his mind.
Either that, or he knows that the voter fraud is THAT deeply entrenched that he believes he has it in the bag.
And in May, Thad Cochran said This is not a debating society, Cochran said explaining his decision not to debate McDaniel. This is a race for the United States Senate.
This is a recent trend that I date back to the townhall meetings of 2010 that really woke up the conservative base. Remember when Arlen Specter was shouted down during a townhall meeting during his last run at the Senate?Well, now all politicians are avoiding the townhall event, instead opting for "virtual" townhalls held over conference calls on telephones.
And now they are avoiding public debates, too.
Debates are going to be a thing of the past for our aging ruling class. Count on it.

“Empty chair”
Gardner should press forward and turn the event into a one-man town hall meeting. A free hour of interacting with voters would be golden. An empty chair signifying Udall’s cowardly avoidance of the debate would add additional spice to the event.
Gardner could have some fun with this one. During the one-sided debate — on live TV — Gardner should attempt to reach Udall by phone to answer a question from a voter. The resultant inability to reach Udall would further drive home the fact the chicken-sh*t dem is a no-show.
Good observation.
While touting ‘democracy’ in every made-for-TV rambling senate floor speech, the trend has been toward less accountability to, and contact with, voters.
Senators work for party, not state interests. There is no practical need to read and understand pending bills when party leadership dictates votes. As Cochran knows, blind party loyalty means embarrassing confrontations with voters during election season. It has become politically safer to take the heat and avoid public contact with voters.
This is republican government?
Except for the times the moderators ask transparently biased questions and have transcripts handy to defend their candidate.
