A senior Homeland Security (DHS) official confirmed to Congress on Wednesday that militants associated with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) are planning to enter the United States via the porous southern border.
Francis Taylor, under secretary for intelligence and analysis at DHS, told senators during a hearing that ISIL supporters are known to be plotting ways to infiltrate the United States through the border.
There have been Twitter, social media exchanges among ISIL adherents across the globe speaking about that as a possibility, Taylor told Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.) in response to a question about recent reports on Twitter and Facebook of messages that would urge infiltration into the U.S. across our southwestern border.
Certainly any infiltration across our border would be a threat, Taylor said, explaining that border security agents are working to tighten measures that would prevent this from taking place.
Im satisfied we have the intelligence and the capability on our border that would prevent that activity, Taylor said.
However, McCain was dubious, referring to recent videos released by activist James OKeefe showing him crossing the border while wearing an Osama bin Laden mask.
Asked by McCain why agents did not stop OKeefe, Taylor could not provide an answer.
You cant answer it because they werent there to stop him, McCain responded.
The fact is there are thousands of people who are coming across our border who are undetected and not identified, and for you to sit there and tell me that we have the capability or now have the proper protections of our southwest border, particularly in light of the urgings over Facebook and Twitter [by ISIL] for people to come across our southwestern border, is a great concern to the citizens of my state.
Taylor admitted that more must be done to shore up border security in light of ongoing threats.
The security at the southwestern border is of great concern to the department and I certainly understand the concerns of the citizens of your state, he told McCain. If I gave you the impression I thought the border security was what it needed to be to protect against all the risks coming across the state thats not what I meant to say.
There is little evidence to prove that ISIL militants or other terror actors would be stopped if they attempt to cross the border, McCain said.
I dont think theres any doubt, I dont see when you look at ISIS and the growth and influence of ISIS that it would be logical [to claim they would be stopped], as theyre saying on Facebook and Twitter, to come across our southwest border because they can get across, he said.
Other U.S. officials have warned ahead of President Obamas speech this evening that ISIL is growing in strength and seeking the capability to attack America directly.
We remain mindful of the possibility that an ISIL-sympathizerperhaps motivated by online propagandacould conduct a limited, self-directed attack here at home with no warning, Matthew Olsen, director of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center, said in a recent speech.
We have seen ISIL use a range of media to tout its military capabilities, executions of captured soldiers, and consecutive battlefield victories, Olsen said. More recently, the groups supporters have sustained this momentum on social media by encouraging attacks in the U.S. and against U.S. interests in retaliation for our airstrikes. ISIL has used this propaganda campaign to draw foreign fighters to the group, including many from Western countries.
yep ... nobody is certain though some groups are being monitored. All the clues say we pass tomorrow okay but is no reason to drop our guard ... Certainly do pray we do pass tomorrow and no harm comes. Yes, fully agree with you on your post. Holidays coming.
Why wouldn’t they. It’s so easy a million kids can do it. Obama gave them the invitation, they will be here.
Oh yeah. Never mind.
Indeed he is, and pretty good friends with all the southern border interlopers, if his previous stances on border security and building a border fence can be believed.
Planning?
Was it dated 2012?
They are here, beware.
I don’t expect airplanes either. I suspect attacks on schools, malls, churches, theaters, football games, etc. An attack on the power grid or water systems wouldn’t surprise me either.
They might run a ruse too. Run ruse, cause large crowd to be moved to a location. Have to know they have been watching on these dry runs that have been being run.
Looks like it’s time to break out the .40 cal double-stack and start carrying it again...on, wait - I’ll be ON BASE next week, so I CAN’T protect myself!
How the hell did we get here?
Excellent point!
What makes it so much worse is that we can’t trust the leaders of the federal government. We don’t know if they are naïve fools committed to flawed ideology or if they are actually in league with terrorists. I suspect the latter. I’ve seen nothing to convince me Obama has anything but nefarious motives.
fully agree
Planning? If they’re only just planning then I have a bridge for sale.
While one radical Muslim faction occupies the White House another plans to invade. More Obama “change.”
The Texas NG is primarily assisting the Texas DPS with cartel criminal activity, suspected terrorist activity, and other state-related crimes, which is the majority of the action in rural and scarcely populated areas. A larger presence would allow them to cover more of the area where the cartels and terrorists slip through.
The Texas NG can and does call Border Patrol if and when they encounter illegals. They are armed and have the power to detain illegals for BP but no power to arrest, yet. Perry can give them that power. But enforcing federal immigration law is not their mission.
Generally speaking, the illegal aliens are crossing in populated areas. Many turn themselves over to BP because they know that they’re going to be able to stay for a long time (years) before being deported. They get free healthcare, food, etc.
Yes, the NG can act when they are responding directly to state-related criminal activity. Yes, they can be held responsible if they violate civil rights or act with criminal negligence. No, they can’t enforce federal immigration law. No, they can’t be sued/imprisoned for enforcing state law.
With respect to the militia, it’s a fine line. Without a call to action from Rick Perry, they are simply citizens and can only defend themselves or the lives and private property of those who give them permission to do so. With a call from Rick Perry, they are part of the military forces of Texas and are bound by the same laws as the Texas NG.
I was going to say “standing at the airport with our junk literally in the hands of TSA agents,” but “standing in our socks” works too. ;p
A fence ain’t gonna stop ‘em. Not in Texas anyway. It might slow ‘em down a little bit, but they’ll go over, under, around or through it without too much delay.
If you meant an electrified fence with landmines, armed guards, and heavy air support, that might make a difference.
Woo, thank you for the nuts and bolts! :)
Pre-emptive permission for Guard and militia to arrest, battle, and shoot during these times of increasing threat or risk from terrorists crossing the border would be of comfort to Texans and all Americans. Thanks, Buckeye.
I know. These bad guys are already here, trust that.
Yep BUMP!
Works for me. :-)
Yes, I think the only reason they would pull something off tomorrow is to show how weak we are.
Use the day it’s expected to honor Obama for the work he has done for all terrorists worldwide.
I think Obama has the terror threat level set to rainbows and balloons, or maybe even unicorn.
Yep, that was in the media title.
