This is what happened when I drove my Mercedes to pick up food stamps
Washington Post ^ | Sept 10, 2014 | Darlena Cunha

That’s how I found myself, one dreary day when my Honda wouldn’t start, in my husband’s Mercedes at the WIC office. I parked gingerly over one of the many potholes, shut off the purring engine and locked it, then walked briskly to the door — head held high and not looking in either direction.

To this day, it is the single most embarrassing thing I’ve ever done.

No one spoke to me, but they did stare. Mouths agape, the poverty-stricken mothers struggling with infant car seats, paperwork and their toddlers never took their eyes off me, the tall blond girl, walking with purpose on heels from her Mercedes to their grungy den.

Welcome to life...

It is filled with ups and downs.

I have been up and down and know what it feels like. But never, ever, did I depend on a government program to supply me with food - and I had young children at the time.

Taking part time hobs was what kept me afloat even though some of them were pretty demeaning - but we made it back....

This makes me wonder whether this entire piece was just sarcastic humor. More subtle than spoiled rich girl Jessica Simpson complaining that she thought a can of tuna was chicken, because it was called “Chicken of the Sea”.

Seriously, they couldn’t bear to part with a paid off Mercedes? For a *lesser* car, because *lesser*, or even, *ick*, used cars are just piles of junk, don’t you know? You just can’t drive around in a used BWM or people will think you are hobos!

If it was a higher end Mercedes, typical of such upscale people, its resale value was perhaps $25,000. “But honey, we can’t *possibly* do without our ‘sades’! Let’s get food stamps instead!”

“What do we do? If we feed our children we can’t afford enough powdered cocaine for both of us!”

Did she have to get a tattoo? Seems like everyone with an EBT card has a tattoo. Is this some sort of government program? If so, it seems like the only government program that works. /S

I simply don’t believe this story.

Neither do I. Smacks of 'fake but accurate'.

Welcome to FR.

I'm sorry that I'm so dense, but what is the point/purpose of the article.

Thanks in advance.

ok, here goes.........a compliment to her

I am impressed that she did not abort the babies, but had them and raised them herself. And, they are now self sufficient financially. Good for them.

” I drove my Mercedes to pick up food stamps”

Obviously, she didn’t understand the “optics” of it. ;^)

“President Obama’s programs — from the extended unemployment benefits to the tax-free allowance for short-selling a home we couldn’t afford — allowed us to crawl our way out of the hole.”

Thanks WP.

If you read the article carefully, Miss Mercedes is thankful to our wonderful president for the programs that let her get through these setbacks with enough money left over for grad school and the Mercedes. Stupid stupid girl, in so many ways.

Yeah.

Also, I mean, any of these articles where some woman writes a confessional about a humbling experience in almost any publication is usually total BS.

These types of articles have been popping up more frequently lately.

“I’m just a normal rich white mom, BUT THEN.... Dun Dun Dun... Boy did it sure open my eyes!!!!!”

Notice they are never written by men? Weird huh. Not really. They are part of the liberal axis and many would sell their sons and husbands down the creek for a marshmallow and in principal, they often do.

It’s really hard to find sympathy for a woman who got pregnant while still single and working a $25,000 a year job

The point of her article is to teach the rest of us about poverty: "Poverty is a circumstance, not a value judgment."

Yet the truth of the matter is that this woman has no idea what real poverty is. Poor people in the rest of the world don't have electricity or running water. They eat out of city garbage dumps and build shelters out of cardboard that they happen to find. I suggest that she visit the dumps in Mexico City, or Cairo, or Lagos, or Calcutta, and watch six and seven year old children scrounging through the rubbish looking for scraps of metal that they can sell for a few pennies. Maybe then she would know what poverty is. And then maybe she would realize the hypocrisy of getting paid to write articles lecturing the rest of us on something about which she doesn't know jack.

It took 20 posts before some common sense showed up in this thread.

It is sad the way some people on this forum are so quick to castigate others.

Thank you.

“There is a month and day in the article that are different”

I would guess that she wrote the article earlier and it wasn’t published till today. Or maybe it was republished in the on-line edition after being in print on 7/8. Who knows.

She credits obama programs for helping her get out of the trench. Apparently, the rest of the welfare queens aren’t as bright as her family and should be supported for the lives by ever expanding handouts form Americans who are just getting by. All hail obama.

I know of a grade school where >90% of the kids are on welfare (Free School Lunch).

The parking lot is full of relatively new Mercedes and BMWs at pickup time (3:45 P.M).

Think about that one for a minute.

But it wasn’t a toy — it was paid off. My husband bought that car in full long before we met. Were we supposed to trade it in for a crappier car we’d have to make payments on? Only to have that less reliable car break down on us?

Idiot. Sell the Kompressor for cash, buy a cheaper used car for cash, save enough for maintenance and pocket the rest. Some people are poor because they're unfortunate. Some, because they're stupid.

President Obama’s programs — from the extended unemployment benefits to the tax-free allowance for short-selling a home we couldn’t afford — allowed us to crawl our way out of the hole.

Thank you Dear Leader! All praise to Dear Leader! What got them out of the hole was finding another job, not a two-bit politician with a thousand-dollar suit and a million-dollar PR campaign. Brought to us by journalists just like the author. From that part of this that was actually true (and I doubt it was much) she learned nothing.
